I may have an opportunity to get a Starion in great shape from a friend in the US. I have heard allot about the process but I have no idea where to start so has anyone imported a car from US? If so I would appreciate what ever information you can provide. Any do's and don’ts, links, suggestions, etc would all be much appreciated.

Tone,
I recall there are a few people on here who have done this and hopefully they will chime in. In the mean time, here is a link you might want to check out. The original link no longer works, but that's why Google rocks:

Also try a search of the board.

BTW - where are you gonna put it? smile

I have seen a few on the road up here and was confused because I remember them as banned by the list at RIV? Long story on the car, friend of a friend, and the right price so it is worth looking into it. Space is a problem but we may be moving soon and I also may have an opportunity to get in on that shared unit my friend has, sure could use it now!

If the car is over 15 years do they even check still?

I imported my '96 Eclipse GS-T from Florida and what I did is I went there, put the car in my name(I had a FLorida ownership) and got temp plates(with proof of insurance) then I had to call US Customs and tell them I am exporting a car and had to wait 3 days until I could bring it over the border. At that point at the Canadian customs they look at the car, check their list to make sure the car is not banned from import, you show them the export papers you get from US Customs, pay some taxes and the way you go. When you try to register the car in Ontario you need a federal inspection (Canadian tire does it), e-test, safety...and that's it!!

Hey, I had the same deal going on a few months ago and put up a post on this board... I found out that 1987-1990 Starions are inadmissable (someone was kind enough to put up the link of cars that arent admissable).

Anyways, you could always use the starion as a parts car, and throw the whole set-up into an old RWD corolla (or any other small RWD car).

Here is the Registrar Imported Vehicles Canada site. It explains the process there.

Write that down.
