So the vibration was confirmed to be the axel. Jamie Valcamp and I went at the car last night with a spare axel he had kicking around. Sadly, it was the wrong side! So we got resourceful and took it apart, and used it's inner workings to make my old axel feel like new. Long story short, she drives MUCH nicer now.

I'll post pictures tonight!

and just let me say, that I don't know how many more rotations that old joint could have gone without completely seizing. Needle bearings and chunks of metal everywhere!

a good learning experience plus we also figured out how to disassemble, clean and reassemble an outer joint. Perhaps we should have looked at the bad axle first though as it was the inner that had issues. Good thing we had the Captain helping us along after that 2 hour setback.

The outer is quite interesting. I just rebuilt 2 front axles for both sides on for the AWDAuto. Kind of interesting how they're held together. One small snap ring is all that holds the axle together. smile

Lookie lookie!

Thought I'd throw in a gratuitous photo of Jamie's car, since he doesn't put any of his own up wink

Then my car sitting at the hoist:

Jamie playing with his balls and cleaning the outer CV joint:

As it turns out my vibration wasnt the outer joint...

The CV boot was full of needle bearings, metal chunks of stuff, and crap in general

Sorry to thread hijack Eric, but I thought I'd share this:

With reference to cutting AN hose with a sharpened chisel and aluminum block; I got sick of doing it this way and sharpening the chisel after about 5 cuts, so I bought this sweet gem.

Heavy Duty Braided Hose Cutter

I was a little skeptical at $19.99, but I took a chance on it and it works perfect. Cuts the hose clean, and yields an identical finish to the chisel method (braid wrapping tight around the hose instead of fraying outward).

Don't know of any place in Ontario that sells them. I bought mine directly from them and just had them shipped to the states. I couldn't believe how well they worked. I was going to buy a similar set from Jegs, but the reviews weren't as good.

Paul, I can bring these with me tomorrow. I was hoping to pick up my order tomorrow if you guys are around.

Eric, what were the symptoms you were getting from that axle? I had a vibration show up just before putting my car away, but never really had the chance to diagnose it..

I was getting a vibration while driving, was rather violent.. however, it didnt change while turning. It showed up at speeds greater than ~60km/h and was unbearable around 80km/h. When we lifted the car you could feel the axel was noticably broken. With all 4 wheels off the ground and the tires spinning, you could see physical movement as well.

Newbie question.

Axel failures are progressive and don't happen all of a sudden...am I correct in saying this?

Just trying to fill my knowledge base with symptoms in case I have to diagnose problems with my ageing car.

Michael - Axle failure due to wear is progressive. Axle failure due to the inability to handle the amount of torque put through it is immediate. As wear progresses, the ability of the axle to handle torque diminishes.

Eric - It was similar for me but the speeds were higher (would start to feel it at 80, unbearable at 120, so less of a problem). When you got on the throttle would the vibration go away at all?

Good to know, thanks Jeremy.

I guess a few good hard successful launches would tell me that my axles are in good working order. smile

I would say yes, when I let go of the throttle the vibration lessened, however, it didn't go away.

Eric's axle had a new CV boot on at some point and looked as though not near enough grease was used. We basically just wiped a thin layer from the inside of the boot. No grease was really left on the rollers at all. I'm assuming that led to overheating in the needle bearings and damage shown above.

How often should one grease up the CV joints?

Really, never. If for some reason it was "low" on grease it would mean it was getting out somehow and the boot is supposed to be a sealed unit.

Update! And likely the last one for this season... I've got plans for winter already though wink

So I got another package in from RTM Racing today. All the necessary fittings to install my new AFPR! Also I got a set of Sparco hood pins, they feel a lot more substantial than the aluminum no name ones.

[Linked Image]

Here's a glory shot of the Zaklee clear t-belt cover laugh Ooooh pretty!

[Linked Image]

And here's the new AFPR all plumbed in! Finally she can drink the fuel needed to keep that mill spinning!

The final mod for this season, I think. lol. I finally installed hood pins. I didn't fully trust my hood to stay latched; at high speeds my hood was a little sketchy.

Jamie! I am super jealous, I was pretty set on my next house being brand new but property sizes are super small these days. I think I will have to go for something older with some space so that I have room to build something like that!

Eric, you still rocking the latch too?

One side will be for the trailer/RV. This side will have a 14' door.
The other side will have workbenches/shelving/etc. plus the lift and room for a car or two and ATV/lawn tractor, etc. This side will have a 10' door and thre will be a loft inside the garage on this side from the front wall back for (I think) about 10'. The rest of this side will be open ceiling (17') like the rest of the garage.

Jamie, please correct me if I've got it wrong tongue

The project has been in the wings for a few years now.
That's pretty close Salomon. We're just not sure if you wanted walls and a big screen up in your loft or if you would be happy with just snuggling up with spare engines/tranny/etc.

We were having some debate on just how many DSM's we could fit.

I may start a new build thread once I get a bit further along.

A big screen? Sounds enticing but that would kill productivity! All I need is a hammock and a bar fridge and we're rocking. (Just make sure the wifi reaches, please!) When's the 'closing date'? I need to know when to take time off to move in!

Eric, are you next on the list for new garages?
