Just a little rant, I have found that in the last month or two there have been a lot of bumping going on. I always like to check when people update their for sale adds to see if they have added anything or if the price has changed, and when I see that it just says BUMP it get's frustrating. Rant finished, thanks guys!

We sweep them up when we catch them. Normally the bump just disappears a short time after it was posted. Repeat offenders get the thread locked.

If there is a particular problem with a thread, you can notify a mod. But have patience, we are watching and cleaning.

Yes, it's annoying seeing a "bumped" thread. However, guys take the time to take pics and write up descriptions. They come on here to try and sell their stuff and rely on questions and updates in their thread(s) to keep it alive. If there are NO questions or updates the thread gets lost and is far from "active". What if the same person were to simply cut and paste their FS thread and start a new one??? Would that be the same as "bumping"?

Just some food for thought...

It is the same as Bumping but for me it's not as much of an issue. My issue is that the bumpers lately are people that are waiting a week and then bumping, if you wait a month or two it's not that much of any issue. Provide some extra info or change the price. There are lots of options for bumping your thread without actually writing BUMP

If there's a lack of interest, maybe some of the details should change (ie. the price).

Putting up an identical thread to avoid bumping an old one is considered the same as bumping. If there's no new information, it will be deleted.

Personally, I'd make an exception for a very old post (we're talking many months) - but again there would have to be a benefit for that coming back to the first page. Like if I think to myself "how the hell didn't this sell the first time?", maybe I'll assume it fell off due to high FS activity and let it go.
I've seen the same car and same price bumped once a month to keep it on the page. Nuked! It's been done with copy/paste too.

Yeah I saw that it disappeared. But I think that is a good rule Rob. I would also say it is key for people to make sure they updated their threads with stuff that is sold so that when we are searching stuff we know if it is still available.

Because of the fact that search is available there is no reason for someone to bump their thread, if someone really needs something they can search for it. (I use google search because the forum search never works for me)

What happens when your FS thread ends up being 4-5 pages with no 'actual' interest, but instead, your threads ends up being a conversation? Someone clicking on your post would have to scroll to page 1 to see what the actual details are.

If 'I' personally offended you by posting an update about my Spyder for sale (with the 500+ views and multiple page thread) then I'm sorry. I want my car sold and am giving people updates with issues when they are solved. Call it a bump if you wish, but I don't think it is.

If the conversation detracts from the for sale post and does not offer any information on what is being sold, we post a warning. Sometimes we delete the crap out of the thread or we have to lock it (at which point we would allow you to start again with a new ad).

Your posts are OK, Mike. You are adding info. Other people tried to take it off course but they were notified smile
It's OK to link back to the first page or repeat the old info so long as you are also adding new info!

A couple of tips:
You have to set a date range. The built in date range only gives you the past week.
The search term should be an exact word (or words) but can not be less than four letters.

No Mike, it was not you who I was referring too. I think that is what should be done with the thread so that people know the current state.

Rob, should I use wild cards too or just type in what I am looking for?

Click "Advanced Search Tips" for info on wild cards. I find it works better if you know the exact term and you only include that one term. You can get creative but expect to mess with it a bit to get results smile (stupid thing!)

The fun I had trying to find a "B&M" shifter with the search tongue

I don't find the bumping bad on here however on some forums I'm on, holy god it's bad.

I usually only respond to my FS posts when an item is sold.

Do people know what obo stands for?

Seen a few threads that their update is either "best offer" or "open to offers" but their original post is an 'obo'.

sigh...

The search function on this forum is terrible...I'm pretty sure anyone will agree with me on that.

Regardless, bumping should be allowed, but only in certain quantities.

On most other car forums I frequent it is a 'Bump-a-day' rule i.e. you are allowed to bump your 'For Sale' thread(s) once a day maximum. It makes a lot more sense to have it like this, particularly given the terrible search function on here.

The search is not so bad when you set a date range. Bumping each day would have both the forum and the search filled with bumps.

I've always set a date range and the search often brings up extremely irrelevant stuff and often, regardless of what I try, I cannot get it to go back past a certain date. This is brutal cause a lot/most of the answers I'd need were answered long ago (can never seem to get threads older than a few years).

Any tips?

I use the date range "newer than 9 years" and I use only one very specific search word. The use of quotes and operators is hit or miss. I agree it is not the best search with having to weed through many replies per topic. It is what it is: Better than what we had before (if you remember) tongue

You can limit Google to our forums with a search like this:

Is there a way to only show topics instead of every individual post/reply? It would save A LOT of hassle/time.

I've looked around to try and change the search default settings, etc in the past, but there doesn't seem to be much available for us to change... Or, I'm just dumb... shrug.

Now, I'll have all kinds of time to talk about DSMs, because I won't be busy fixing mine!

It's probably just the type of message board this is (as it's pretty old).

I'm sure there's others which offer more flexibility and customization... but I'm not complaining as it's offered to us for free smile

I think the single greatest upgrade to the search would be to limit one post per thread option.

But as Mike said, it's more of a want than a need smile
