Hey Guys

I'm dying to get another DSM and I came across this one. I'm going to see it on Saturday, but want to ask you guys if there's anything that sticks out which you notice that I may have missed.

99 Eclipse GST
130,000 miles. He's not sure if it's the original motor in there.
Red
5speed
Certified/E-tested

17" rims
MBC
B&G Springs with Tokiko Illuminas
Turbo Timer

He told me that there is a noise coming from the clutch when ever you press the pedal - Throwout bearing? Also, I see some oil leakage around the valve cover, but he said it's just from the gasket.

It does have higher mileage, so he's flexible on the price. I wont post what he's asking... but I want to know your guys opinion and what would you pay for it? Or should I keep my eyes open for something else.

By any chance is that car located in Waterloo? I've seen a red 2G Eclipse (not sure what trim) that looks just like that driving around Loo on a number of occasions.

Strut towers look pretty solid. How's the frame/inner fenders/etc?

Mike,

I would suggest taking someone with you that knows what to look for. Compression test, leak down test, shaft play in the turbo long list.

Looks pretty good from the pictures. I would definitely give it thorough look over if you're serious about the car.

I always give everything a good look over, my main focus is usually the engine, make sure everything is up to snuff and hasn't been abused or neglected.

I gotta ask though Mike, another GST? Why not go GSX/TSi AWD?

A 13 year old car is like a 20+ year old house. There will be hidden surprises everywhere, so if it has visible surprises, get out before you're fighting both.

Let's say you've got a throwout bearing and a gasket. So you're in for a tranny-dropping job and a gasket replacement, before you notice any other thing about the car. Even at that, on a 13-year old car that needs a ton of maintenance (as all 13-year old cars do, there's no way to have an old car that doesn't take a lot of care), he better be pretty much giving it to you for a grand.

Then, add on that it's not a AWD turbo engine, knock that price to $500. Because everyone can get a cheap non-Turbo Eclipse. I know it says 99, and that mattered in 2004 when it was 5 years old, not 6 (vs 98s). But now it's 13, not 14, which is like comparing 1 year difference in ages of people in retirement homes.

So, if it's 500, go for it smile
If it's 2k, consider a Tsi.
If it's 4k, import from the USA.

Anything other than 500-1000, tell him to get the work done and then you'll come look at it. You don't need to inherit someone else's problems.

(All this may be moot, since you were going to see it Sat, and this is Monday).

The moment a turbo spools, all your dreams are made possible.

Because since Oct, I haven't seen a decent 2gb AWD show up for sale. Well, there's this one, but I'll have to go out and buy the few mods, and get them installed. It's also in Cobourg, which is a bit of a drive http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Eagle/Talon/COBOURG/Ontario/19_5380410_/

I've just noticed that the AWD 2gb is so hard to find now. I want something for this Summer.

Nope, it's in Ingersoll. Maybe he drives out there though

Thanks for the good advice. Unfortunately he isn't selling it for a grand. The way he sounded on the phone is that if he realizes the car needs a/b/c fixed, he'll consider that with the offer I give him. He said that he's willing to bring it by a shop for the certification, so hopefully if there are any other surprise issue's... they show up then. I defiantly don't want another headache DSM.

On a side note, if someone has Saturday open and wants to come with me... I'll pay you for your time/gas. Let me know

Mike, I think this is the best one that's been posted in this thread (no offense to Tim's friend).

1. Price isn't too bad, I'm sure there is room for negotiation, and cash in someone's face really speaks volumes.

2. It's a 2gb talon! Even if you want to swap to eclipse bumpers, 2gb talon stuff is a rare find.

3. Strut towers look clean, and the mileage is great.

4. Tastefully modified, no doesn't appear to be hacked up.

So what if it's a bit of a drive, it might be worth it. There's quite a few members on here that live in that area that might be able to go have a look at it for you.

A couple years ago, Ryan L was nice enough to check out a car for me out in North Bay.

That car is super clean, I definitely like the interior too, very tasteful. 9 grand is definitely steep, though

I hear ya Jay. If that Talon was closer to the GTA... I would have been to see it already. I wouldn't mind taking the drive... I'll just have to find time to do it.

Does anyone from the board live around there?

Paul S. on this board checked this car out for me when I was hunting around. This guy has 2 dsm's and this is his winter car. Car overall is in decent shape. In the pics you can see the strut towers have been repaired, not the greatest job though. Car is a bit different from pics, He has some carbon fibre pieces replacing OEM. I dont remember every detail but give Paul S. a shout.

Edit: That red one hes in Kingston. It was on kijiji since last year.

if there's an oil leak around the VC, check the cam seals on the timing side, and inspect the belt. Do you know when it was last changed?

I'm seeing the one from Ingersol on Saturday. Alex PM'd me saying that he might be able to come with me. The more eyes looking, the better. If you want to come, let me know Mike! Even if you want to swing up there before Saturday - that'd be awesome. Let me know how much the gas $ is and I'll EMT it to you.

I haven't talked to him about that leak. I just noticed it in the pictures and he said that he hasn't gotten around to fixing it yet. That... lazyness.. could be in other problem areas of the car as well.

For the only important thing is rust. Everything else will eventually need to be fixed/replaced anyway, might as well not brake off every bolt on the way. Personally, I'd only buy a car from the US, below the snow/salt belt.

And by rust I don't mean rust you can see on the body panels I mean rust on the undercarriage.

Which is why I've been keeping my fingers crossed for a 2gb Eclipse that's stayed in storage throughout the winter smile

I don't think the right one for me is up for sale yet - but it won't hurt to look at these few.

Rust is the huge thing for me. Everything else I can fix but rust is a complete pain in the ass.

That and personally I'd try to go for a car that is as close to stock as possible.

I have mixed opinions on buying stock. On one hand, it's going to make me spend more on parts + labor to install because I will not be happy with a stock DSM at 4x4 height. On the other hand, I know that it was not abused. If the price is realitively in the same price range, I'd pick a lightly modified over stock.

example being, there's some seller asking 7 grand for a stock 2g AWD talon with 160k but this car in Ottawa that Mike Eng saw for me, had a similar setup to my Spyder for 5500 but it needed small stupid things to be fixed

The transmission was be completly rebuilt by the older owner all speed enter very good, the car run very smooth and good. Very funny to drive but a bit hard cause the ceramic clutch. Typically, Quebec cars ='s stay the f away.

I would agree with this statement but there are a handful of honest/responsible owners and lets face it, if you own a dsm, chances are you've had some "fun" with it..whether or not from Quebexico.

Ha, look what I started .... I don't think anyone would pay what I would ask for it - considering I know what Andrea got for his AWD Spyder. If I posted a price most would say I'm nuts. I'll probably just keep in and leave it parked for the next few years until I move out of a condo into a house

Let's talk. You have a rare gem so I can understand a more expensive price. Send me a pm with details and a few pictures

"a more expensive price" is probably like $10K on top of the price you're looking at all with all those beat up 2G's on Kijiji. My tranny alone cost me $3000

you'll need to boost 'em. 200hp is weak imo.
