"Remove(d) rear axles, remove(d) drive shafts
Rear diff. gone bad, in order to repair needs 2 rear axles
rear drive shaft, rear wheel bearings, rear diff. assy "

A year after buying the car when I finally got it on the road I came across this paper work from a mechanic in the glove compartment of my talon... bomb

So I was fairly upset since the seller never told me. sh!t happens weep

Basically my car is running FWD with the weight of an AWD. Now how should I go about fixing this is my question. The rear diff is still on the car and from my understanding can't be too damaged or else my rear wheels would be locked? Could the car even run without rear axles? I also don't understand what he means by the rear diff assembly? The upper drive shaft is also still on the car.

I don't know or heard of the mechanic who did the work. Seems sketchy to me...spy I also know the previous owner did no work on the car himself since he paid this same mechanic to change the pads and rotors on the car (he could just be busy I guess but I don't know) so could this guy just be trying to rip him off? Let me know what you guys think. I have pics if needed

This is my first project for next spring when I start to put in serious work into my talon so I'd like to know what I am dealing with.

Have you verified what is or isn't missing? I couldn't quite make out if you were going just off what the paper said or if you actually checked everything out.

Pics would be great.

Car should not drive in this "configuration", something is definately up.

Look under the car to confirm if the Drive Shaft is present also check if the Rear Axles (CV Shafts) are there.

Good call!! I think I would go with throwing in the drive shaft and see if the rear wheels move. If they don't then start looking at everything else. Picking up Ziggys whole rear assembly is definitely a good call though! Seems they are auto specific

There were a few kijiji adds of people selling the whole rear assembly for $500.

Yeah getting parts shouldn't be the problem. I'm concerned with how difficult of a task this will be to install everything. Would I need any special tools? I've replaced axles before but iv never worked on a drive shaft or an AWD car

You'll most likely need a whole diff . You won't wanna just pop in axles

I am amazed that someone would let that slide on a safety. You should call the ministery and raise hell.

Its been two years. Highly doubt they'll care. Furthermore it was probably done under the table. If my memory serves correct he said something about being friends with a mechanic so this was probably a favour he asked of him

I think the MTO would take it very seriously. I remember once having to go to court once when a lady said it was becauseof the safety that she got drunk and rolled her explorer on the way home from the bar.

They were claiming that the 1/4" of wheel bearing play caused her to roll.

I guess the fact that it rolled couldnt in anyway damage a wheel bearing.

I really don't like these shady techs gives my trade a bad name.

Next time have your vehicle inspected by a thirdparty just to avoid things like this.

Thanks Mike frown I will for sure have this done asap. Tbh when I bought the car it was for the sexiness of the 2gb talon AND the turbo. I never even tried launching but once I found out about this I've felt empty frown as long as I can do the work myself this shouldn't be a problem

WOW.

Well, what's done is done. All you need to do now is properly correct the missing parts.

If you're in a bind, i dont mind helping you out if our schedule's match up.

I almost forgot what 2nd and reverse gear feels like.

Probably figured it out when you were "breaking traction" at a light?? tongue

How long ago did you buy the car?

Have you spoken to the seller since?

Agreed. I can't dwell on my stupid mistake, it could be worse. Thanks for the offer Joe, since I won't be driving when I start this my schedule should be easy to deal with as I will probably book off a few days from work to be able to do this in peace. I've been reading a lot of AWD swap write ups so I do have an idea what I'm doing and like I said before as long as there are no special tools needed I should be ok. If I have any questions or get truly stuck I'll shoot you a pm. Free beer of course smile (or any other beverage of choice)

I bought the car 2 years ago almost to the day. I haven not spoken with him since.

Thanks to some poor life choices I was unable to drive the car for the first two months, which meant I started driving in January and only for a month. Even though I THOUGHT the car to be AWD I wasn't about to start trying to launch it or push in the snow especially since I knew I would only be driving for a month. It sat on my driveway for 10 months and I finally get the car on the road, a full year since I bought it basically. It's then that I realize what has happened frown the number that belonged to the seller no longer worked.

Maybe it has a VCE installed. How else could it be driven like that for that long?

If i were you i would talk to MTO for sure. I have heard of mechanics helping out to get someones car on the road but this is beyond crazy. A mechanic doing a fake safety like this to scam someone is not right.

Like I said because it was over a year after I bought the car it too late to do much. I could never get a hold of the owner and the number for the mechanic was disconnected as well.

HOWEVER... onto more positive news santa I've pretty much purchased everything I need to get in the AWD game thanks to Nigel's partout lol

I should be spinning all 4 wheels by next spring demon

If the conversion was done correctly, your transmission may have a viscous coupling eliminator installed...

If it was not installed, you will still want to take a peek inside to see anything that may be buggered from running it like that...

Mmmm ok thanks for the heads up. I'be been doing a lot of reading since I started this thread so I've familiarized myself with the AWD system so hopefully I can do this with out any issues smile

If there was no VC eliminator or welded center diff installed, it would feel like the clutch was slipping under any real load, i.e. rpms would rise without speed increasing.

The only noticeable side affect was the obvious lose of tractions and wheel spin lol and that was usually when the ground was wet a bit and just through 1st and 2nd.

It's never felt like a slipping clutch. I know for a fact because I had a slipping clutch before.

Now how exactly would I begin to either remove the VC eliminator and would I need to replace the center diff?

I would remove the VC eliminator or welded center diff, whatever it has, once you put the rear axles back in. If you do a little search you'll figure out how to remove the center diff, or try to find a service manual online for the trans.

Wether the shaft is it there or not it makes no nevermind. From what i remember about vce's the shaft wont turn even if it was there. From what the shady mechnic did he probably just left the half prop shaft so the tcase didnt leak. You might be into some tranny work to fix whatever was done and for that I would save up some money and have Reza have a looky at it.
