I can't even remember how my Talon was in the winter. I might have to buy a beater tsi and relive my youth.

Actually alex we had snow that morning, unfortunately it wasn't enough and I don't think it was cold enough for it to stick around.

I've been contemplating whether or not I should buy snow tires for the Ralliart this year. The OEM Dunlop SP5000's on it right now are still brand new and I was hoping I could make it through the winter with these.

Anyone have any experience with the Dunlop SP5000's in the snow in an AWD car?

The worst winter tire is better than the best all season tire in the winter time. Just an IMO reza. Those dunlops will probably turn into hockey pucks below 20 degrees

I think it can go both ways for summer too. Because the tires are designed for the whole season, they don't do a great job on either season.

Don't do it Reza! Last thing you want on that beauty is damage. I have only driven the SH-AWD TL and MDX with their summer tires and let me tell they are scary on snow and ice even with the VSA. You can't beat good old snows.

Yeah, snow tires are great. I doubled my winter beater's value when I put them on, but for the peace of mind and added traction it's worth it.

I thought all seasons on an AWD were going to be alright, and I made it pretty easily through the year last year with all seasons of my Jetta. But I remember snows on my Talon were one of the best investments I made. It just felt so much safer.

Chances are you'll get a discount on your insurance if you have them installed from November - March. I sure do wink
All seasons/Rain = Summer If summers used in winter, I hope you like drifting and skidding through stop signs. (Come to think of it... all I can think about is that Ford Fiesta from the NFS Most Wanted video. LAWL!)
Winter = Winter Is Winters used in the summer you're just throwing your money away as the rubber is too soft and you'll chew through it like barnuts on all you can drink sunday.

I think in the city you'll be fine with all seasons.

My family has never had any problems.

We're talking all season tires, not performance all seasons or summers. Just regular all season tires that come on sedans.

For everyone that lives in the burbs, yes, you should put winters on, but again in the city you'll be fine without them, especially if you have AWD.

If you can afford the tires then why not I guess.

yeah after how I felt last night when some guy hit me I can tell you Reza spend the money on tires I have never felt so much rage! Its making me also get my car appraised and I will be changing my insurance to reflect my investment (if you can call a talon an investment)
Tires wouldnt ahve changed my accident last night since I was stopped but if it was sliding and this happened it would have the same effect on my wallet and brain/temper

Since when did AWD become a mitigating factor in how fast the vehicle can stop?

People seem to think that you get winter tires for only traction when you are driving around. Traction is for both GOING and STOPPING. All season tires have a rubber compound that allows for general all year round driving, meaning the tires won't turn into hockey pucks in Windsor when the coldest it gets is maybe -20??

Go up to Ottawa, hell Belleville sees its fair share of -40 wind chills.

Your "All Season" tires aren't going to do sh!t when you are driving around on basically a block of frozen rubber. Your tire will not grip the road as well when it's frozen.

Bring on the winter tires. Why do you think people run old shitty winters on their FWD's for "slicks"???? Because when they're hot, they are gummy, and designed for cold weather. They don't freeze as easily.

AWD or not, when you hit the brakes, your tires still need to grab onto the road to slow you down. Your all seasons will have a hard time doing that.

Winter tires are designed to grip snow and ice and throw it away. All seasons are designed to grip wet pavement, with some slight design built into the rubber to grip moderate snow and ice. Trust me, after a season driving with all season's in the snow in a FWD then slapping a new set of winters on it, what a difference!

You will grip the road better in turns, straight lines or braking. PERIOD.

Moral of the story: Put some winter's on. There's a reason Quebec makes them mandatory. You'll be pissed when someone rear ends you because they thought their "All Seasons" were just fine in a blizzard. Hell, my Subie Outback had All Season's on it last year and in Ottawa I was scared to try and stop. That's a heavy car.

NB: Winter tires do not make your car invincible on the road on snow. We wrote off our GLI last year, with a set of winters on it when we hit black ice and put it into a pole even when driving cautiously. You will notice a difference.

This post is not directed at anyone in particular, just providing everyone with some perspective.

Just one comment here, the reason they are mandatory there is because plowing is a lot less frequent and I assume their budget for plowing is much lower for that.

I will also add that spikes should be allowed in Ontario, the technology has advanced enough that they don't ruin the road like they used to, which is the reason they are not allowed in Ontario.

I Don't know that is valid statement. I have lived in both both provinces and I can honestly say I don't think Ontario has as many plows as Montreal does let alone all of Quebec.

For 2009 Torontos and Ottawas budget combined was less then just Montreals and their snow amount was less aswell. Montreal got over over 200cm of snow compared to T.O 130cm.

I think they made snowtires mandatory because they work and cause less accidents.

Plus in Quebec It is the Government that carries your $1000000 liability insurance and your insurance company so less injuries makes better sense to them.

Hm that last part is interesting. My sources were people that lived in gatineau region and those areas not too far from Ottawa. I would assume Montreal would be well maintained because of the area.

Ottawa is terrible for moving snow. Well at least they used to be back in the 90's.

Technology has become better yada yada spikes what?

I work for a paving company. As of 2015, you will not see a tri-axle truck in Ontario. You'll have Tandem Tandem trucks (Two drive, two steer). Technology has not gotten better, asphalt is still asphalt.

In Northern Ontario (Parry Sound +), they are legal.

They were still terrible 5 years ago when I was there too. I remember one year Ottawa blew it's plowing budget in the first two snowfalls.

If anything, with AWD, you're more likely to accelerate faster and say "BAHAHAH!!! Suck on snow you Bitchez!!" resulting in the need to brake a little faster.
Get them on and save your ride/another ride/a life or 2 even.

AWD and 4X4 seems to put that S on people chest when in reality that mentality gets them in trouble 4 times faster in snow and ice. Studs are the only thing that helps on ice (tires have gotten better) after a few seasons of spirited winter rally racing it quickly was made clear that studs are there for the win!! Even with a set of Hakkapalettas the studs were all the difference in the world
