I just wanted to run this by you guys just to get some feed back.

I can't find a vacuum canister for my cyclone intake so I've been thinking about other ways to fab up something to actuate the butterflies.

As I understand it, the white canister uses vacuum to keep the runners closed, even if the motot does see a bit of boost. As soon as pressure hits, this will cause to actuator to open. the butter flies.

Here's my idea:

Have some sort of hobbes(sp) pressure switch control a servo that replaces the actuator.

Manifold----Pressure Switch----Servo(Actuator)

Have it wired so that when the pressure switch see's boost, it opens the servo. Anything less and it closes the servo.

I don't know much on servo's but I know it has to be fast and small. Any one know of any shops that sell this stuff?

As I understand it NAPA carries pressure switches so I'm not to worried about that.

I looked at the actuator a few nights ago. Seems a little tricky to get off while it's mounted to the car.

Any thoughts?

You could also use an external waste gate actuator as a fellow member is using.
About the pressure switch, I called NAPA asking for the pressure switch, I took the part # from the US site and they told me that they don't use the same part #'s so I need to find out the equvalent canadian part # if there is any.
Regading the servo control, that seems to me like a part for a robot laugh

Here's a bit of info. I got a Cyclone intake in my 91, and I have it operating properly.

One common misconception about the runners is that they are boost controlled. This is not so! (according to all my research anyway) It is RPM dependant. 3000rpm and down, butterflies closed. 3000rpm up, butterflies open. Regardless of boost.

And here's how I did it: I used a chip normally used for a tach with a shift light output set at 3000rpm. I then used a spare fuel pressure solenoid between the canister and the actuator.

I've been running like this for over 2 years and it's great. There is a bit of bottom end torque to be gained.

Just a little FYI....good luck!

Pascal, I like your idea, can you give us more details about the chip used as a shift light?,
Also according to dsmchips it should be at 4100 rpm.

Hey that's me. Top part of the picture near the coilpack. I polished the inside of the runners too. My 20G spools really fast with this thing and I consistently get over 500km on 46-48 litres on the highway (not boosting of course).

Oh wow...I had never seen 4100rpm...always 3000. Ah well...

As for the chip I used, It's a National Semiconductor LM2917N. The external component count is quite low and they are used to set the rpm point. Forgot to mention the input to this chip is the tach signal. I used the white wire in the engine bay for that purpose.

I have to admit that I'm an electronic thechnician by trade, so it made this little project almost child's play to me. But it's not that difficult to do really.
