So I have been out of the game for a long time and have been trying to build a computer for a while now. I have decided to narrow it down to these two option, listed below, and am hoping I can get some help. There is a ton of chatter online about how anyone build a computer for gaming should I avoid AMD. When I was on top of this stuff I always went with AMD because they were always the best price/performance, nowadays it seems they are pretty even. I am still leaning towards the AMD as the passmark score seems to be better than the Intel one I listed, but would like some input.
Core™ i3-3220 Processor Bundle w/ Asus B75M-A Motherboard AMD™ FX-4350 Processor w/ Asus M5A97 R2.0
Also, other than memory speed and latency is there anything else I need to worry about?

Well I think it will more than likely be AMD route. Then what ever the best deal I can get on memory. Everything else is from my current build.

Sure, that would be cool! Not much budget though looking to keep it low. Maybe around 250-300. I only need mobo, cpu, and memory. Although I would love an ssd that's sadly out of my price range as I would rather update my computer than just my drive.

Stephan why did you choose that motherboard?
Salomon, do you mostly use it for checking compatibility or for pricing? or both?

Seems the best chipset one from MSI on sale from them. Personally, after nearly frying a motherboard and then a CPU by over volting, my MSI motherboard would boot right back up. I have also never had a problem from overclocking an MSI board, even with prolonged gaming and under high heat conditions. That's why I'm biased towards their boards.
Also, the new AMD CPU's supposedly have a good architecture.

I always buy everything from memory express. The have free shipping on wednesday and the price beat policy is the best.
I asked because I looked for reviews on that board and from what I see that cpu doesn't play well when overclocked and has been known to cook the board.
Sal, this site is really cool, it's nice to build everything and see pricing for everything too and I don't have to stress about stuff not working together.

I also read reviews on both my MSI boards about how they don't OC well, but both ran amazing at any speeds and were very forgiving with any errors I made.

I was actually looking at the FX-6300, six core for $5 less than the 4350 you listed, pretty much owns it in every benchmark despite the slightly slower clock speed. Going to take your advice Jason, I have also read a bunch of reviews and people said they were able to get it up to 5GHz clock stable, with stock cool. So I will probably toss it in and overclock it to 4GHz Nice call Salomon, I usually have to search all my parts on shopbot.ca before ordering.

Good choice, I haven't seen anything bad regarding these cpu's. I need to figure out which board I'll go with now and probably 12-16gb of ram.
I already have an SSD hard drive, so it should make a nice upgrade. Seriously, when you can budget in an SSD, do it, they make your system feel much snappier.

well it was a choice between new computer and an ssd. For now I will do the computer, I will be getting a 200+ GB hard drive so I will need to save up. I have always bought ASUS and the M5A97 r2.0 seems to fit what I need on the board. Plus I already have the graphics card I want so I am set there.
I am still on a x2 6000+ at 3.0GHz so it's probably best i do the update.

It's like a whole different level. I need prices to come down on the 240GB SSDs, my 120 has been filled. Too many damn game installations haha

That's the other thing, the more full the SSD is the sooner it will die. that's why I am waiting on a 240 too

Haha I wouldn't bet on that, I tend to hang onto this longer than I should. Like this computer, it's almost 6 years old.
So here is the final build, thank you all for your advice: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
$305 after tax

I've been running a G.SKILL Phoenix Pro 60gb SSD for over 2 years, I haven't noticed any degradation yet. I try to maintain at least 20gb free on it. I have windows 7 and only the apps I used the most installed on it, the rest resides on a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint drive. I used Photoshop(scratch disk on the SSD) and Lightroom a lot, as well as some video editing and the SSD really helped a lot. I'm not a gamer, so I can comment on how it would affect that, but I couldn't see any downside. Here's a quick benchmard of my two drives, not ideal conditions, about 4.4gb of background apps running while doing the benchmark lol. You can obviously see when the SSD hits an empty spot on the drive. The read speeds is generally a little faster, but the access time is the real secret.

Nice, good stuff to know. I thought about splitting it up like that but would prefer not to. 20gb free on a 60gb drive is a lot! so you shouldn't. I am impressed the SSD is going strong, scratch disk will definitely add some wear.

No it was windows 7 setup.
I got it now, I am just in ubuntu right now copying some stuff before I install.
It seems the windows 7 install doesn't want to start with anything more than the bare minimum connect. I had a PCI USB hub and as soon as I took it out I was good to go.

1 stick of RAM, enter BIOS immediately and set the appropriate voltage for your RAM.
Save exit.
Install windows with that single stick of RAM.
If it's still flakey, try another RAM slot or try another stick of RAM, if possible, something really run of the mill that will run at lower stock voltages for DDR2/DDR3 whichever you have.
Edit: Still bad, and getting errors about missing files during disc loading, try another hard drive, could be bad.
I'm going to assume you're using a legitimate copy of windows, otherwise it could be that release you've acquired is just effed up, burn another copy.

Well this night has been a mess.
I finally am installed on windows and then went to grab the stuff I backed up and somehow I installed on the wrong effing drive! They were both labeled the same and I usually pull the drive that I am not putting windows on but this time I opted not too. Anyways it's going to take a while for me to get back up to speed.
Thanks Michael.

I hate when that happens. I just finished building my computer yesterday, put in the final SSD and when I formatted, my SSD and my driver / program partition are the same size, I was like hmm haha.

LOL @Bryan, that's why you ALWAYS put the source as Disk1 and the target as Disc0, so 0 being you main OS drive, new drive. *face palm*

Michael do I do that in BIOS? I changed the boot order of the drive but didn't think that changed what the label was. I honestly should have had the backup labeled like the rest of my drives/
Nice setup Brandon, I think the next thing down the road will be a modular psu, I spent some good time this build hiding wires and making sure they were tucked away before I put the board in.

I didn't get a fully modular, the 850m from corsair is semi. So all your main plugs are there all the time, so CPU and motherboard. Same with 1 row of power connectors. Still, corsair rates their psu on maintained power not peak, so it's a really good psu and goes on sale for around 110.

I have heard a lot of good things about corsair so I will probably go that way.
So the computer has been running for a while now and I have to say I am happy with the setup! It is booting a bit faster, and I am actually able to do stuff as soon as I get into windows, where as before I had to wait for everything to finish loading. The fan control for this motherboard seems to be a lot better, I would say my computer is definitely quieter than before. I have yet to play the games it was struggle with before (Metro Last Light and Witcher 2) but I am sure with the new mobo and cpu I should be good.
What do you guys usually do with your old parts?

Hey carputer, that's cool! I have already hooked up the fam with computers, so good there. I would probably go for one of those tiny things if I was going to do that. I can't imagine using a full size computer for a carputer. What did you use for a screen and where did you put it? That has always been my issue.

Haha, true that would not be good! Good call on the laptop screen! They are relatively cheap to pickup, I am sure I can solder a female connection so that I could use a laptop monitor with with vga.

Yeah Tigerdirect stopped being a good place to go as soon as these other places started popping up. If you are going to buy parts online no buddy beats Memory Express' price beat policy.

Hey Bryan, as I recall you were looking at SSD's. Just wanted to update that the SSD in my desktop for 2 years just died, taking all the documents with it, and for the last couple weeks, the SSD in my toughbook has been hanging for moments at a time which is apparently a sign of a dying SSD (Both OCZ drives. One Vertex II and the other a Vertex III as I recall).

I just picked up a Crutial M4 today after hearing everyone rant and rave about it. Installing new OS and moving folders now. Oh, and a RAM upgrade. 24GB @ 1600 Oh yea... In terms of better stores, I'd say NCIX and Canadacomputers are pretty much neck and neck. Before NCIX was in Ontario, I had them ship my whole system from BC and they had it to me in under a week for less then $30! This thing was a monster as well! They had to ship a Coolermaster Stacker full tower. I'm running a Cosmos tower now, but have been itching for quite some time for the Cosmo II Case. It's nothing short of a beast, but frack is it ever beautiful and well built.

Wow Stephan, sorry to hear that. From what I have read the only brands you should go with is Crucial and Kingston. I have a HAF 922 and I thought that was big!!

http://www.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/case/ultra-tower/cosmos-2.htmlThis thing is king of the tower! So many hot swap drives... I need this thing because I currently have 8 HDD and I'm always having to swap one out because I only have room for 6 on the board. lol. And she weighs 50lbs! I'm rocking it's little yet older brother http://www.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/case/full-tower-cosmos-series/cosmos-s.html24GB of RAM? Holy!
I need to build something soon to run Xplane 10 across my 3 screens. Even with the graphics set to lowest its maxing out both CPU and the GPU. The weakest part of my system atm is my first gen i7 920 core. Aside from that, running 2xGTX280s (in SLI when gaming) and a whopping 4.5TB of storage (it's almost full... ) I have the computer hooked up to my 46" as well for movies/games/browsing from the couch. Aside from that, 4 screens span my desk. When I clean the damn thing, I'll be sure to post a picture. Oh, and logitech z5500 speakers I'd never sell these puppies!

I have about the same amount of storage though it's not that full, only have 3TB almost full. I assume with that many drives you are running raid?

I usually run my stuff in RAID, but never the OS drive.
I'm looking at picking up some of those WD red drives to store all my media stuff on. Supposedly they have longer lives.
A picture would be sweet. I haven't done anything computer related really since I started working on the car, but updating my setup has got to happen soon.

I'm still rocking a Phenom II x6 1190t and in any game it dosent show its age at all. I also use a HD7970 and any game I choose gets maxed out with all the eye candy on my 42" lcd
for the money I'll always use amd. After getting the i5, I will never try AMD again. i5 is the best bang for the buck that there is, and the K series is amazing OC but keeps cool temps. I got my i5 3570k for $215 on sale at Canada Computers

I have mine to 4.5ghz no problem, with the Corsair H70 water cooling setup. Never goes above 60 full load. I'm gonna try and hit 5ghz. But I also may buy a fully real water cooling setup with the hoses that go from the cpu to the video card and back to the radiator.

There. The inside: Cooler is a Corsair H100. Had to cut into the case a little, and can only fit one fan. The temporary setup: Stuck as being a shared desk for now as we are still sorting where to put things from moving.

have you guys never heard of cable management!?
My case used to look like that until I got a taste of cable hiding and much prefer the look and was very meticulous with my last build.

In the case or outside the desk? The case I have has no room in the back for cable management. Its a fairly ugly computer case, but it was only $25.
The desk is only a mess because its shared with the family and everyone leaves their stuff on it.

haha, inside the case was what I was referring to. I too am still working on outside the case, that one is definitely more difficult for me.

Sold it. That build cost something like $1800. I may upgrade to a larger case, but probably not.

Yu want an expensive case, that open thing costs a fortune!!!! Hey Johnny any tips on cable management outside? How neat are we talking?? Zip ties, Velcro straps, and cable sleeping are all you need. It's Ike making a wiring harness for your living room. (Minus the e-tape) run all with wires in bundles depending where they're going. I have a wire hanger under my desk from ikea. It keeps all of the lengthy wires out of sight. Looks like a rats nest, but its organized. Aside from that, I have wires running in the supports of my desk, out to my AV equipment, and up to the screens. All fancy and neat .

I believe 550w. I'll check when I get home. Made by Ultra. I didn't use it often, so there's no reason it should have blown. Tiger has a 650 watt for $60 by Ultra. Might try my luck with that.

I would just go 750, your system is beefier than mine and that's what I am running. I am pretty sure mine is an ultra too.

I've got the Corsair TX850M, which is actually a 1000w psu, but Corsair rates their PSU by constant power, not by peak. Much like Seasonic. Other companies like Cooler Master, rate it by peak, so a 600w Cooler Master may only actually put out 450 - 500. I'm thinking about picking up a new gaming mouse. I've been looking for a mouse that has a pad for my pinky as I'm a picky dragger, not a claw mouse person. I think I'm going to grab the Razer Ouroboros. It's both wireless and wired. Rechargeable if you go wireless, it's an ambidextrous mouse, but you can lock the front and back buttons depending on what hand you are. Here's a picture Currently I'm rocking this bad boy, and have been for over a year, amazing mouse and has been great, but I'd like to grab a mouse pad, but I can't because the feeling of my pinky dragging on a mouse pad grosses me out... lol

I am rocking an old logitech mx laser and a palm pad like this one. Everyong that has ever come to my house seems to be totally clueless as to how to use it, and it becomes entertaining.

I used to have a lot of issues with wrist pain, this has basically made it disappear. Once you get the hang of using it, it just feels weird to use a mouse without it.

Its my old gaming rig.
X6 1100T Giga UD5 Nvidia 650TI Boost (6) 2TB HD (1) 1TB HD (1) 500 GB Black drive You say old... Ridding of any hard drives? . Maybe, you interested in WD EARS? Most of the HD's i have still have about a year + a few months worth of warranty. Im thinking of upgrading to 3 TB+ since im running out of space. 1080p pr0n takes too much space . I've always stick to Antec, Corsair, XFX or seasonic based PS. None of them hasn't let me down yet *knock on wood* .
I almost forgot what 2nd and reverse gear feels like.

Currently I'm rocking this bad boy, and have been for over a year, amazing mouse and has been great, but I'd like to grab a mouse pad, but I can't because the feeling of my pinky dragging on a mouse pad grosses me out... lol Thought i would get used to this thing, its been over a year now and i still find it very small. My hands tend to cup during hardcore fragging. My most comfortable mouse ever was my Logitech G500. Even when said hardcore fragging, my hands just lay on top of it - rather than cupping the mouse per se.
I almost forgot what 2nd and reverse gear feels like.

I used to rock a 1000w XION PSU. That thing was garbage for holding a seady voltage. 12 and 5v rails had a difference of +/- 0.1v. Ended up getting a 750w For $70 after a mail in rebate of $10. Maybe next PC I will feel rich and finally buy a modular Corsair one for $130+ Psus don't HAVE to be expensive. Even good manufacturers have "bad days" I bought a 1kw "azza" I think it's called and it's perfect even today. Grand total of 80$ new from tiger direct

After a quiet night at work, I decided to do some wattage calculations and think more about my PSU choice. Seems with the added 6990, I am going to be requiring (an estimated) 1023w.
Soooo... I am going to splurge on an Antec 1200w PSU and a case that can fit the thing.

Yup. Got one 6950 2gb (Unlocked shaders to make it a 6970, then overclocked) and once I have the supporting mods, I am going to pick up a 6990. They go for pretty cheap these days (only $250-300 used).

You can run two different cards in crossfire? I thought they had to be the same cards?
I ask because I am on a 6970 and my 750 watt psu is doing fine.

A 6990 is just two 6970's in CF on a single board. Its nice, because there is no external link to merge the two together. Unfortunately, the card is VERY long. It needs something like a HAF 932 or larger case to hold it. (Used to own a 5990) There are some cards you can mix, as long as the architecture is the same. http://cdn.overclock.net/0/06/068d19bb_AMD_CrossfireX_Chart_1618W.jpeg

I ask because I am on a 6970 and my 750 watt psu is doing fine. Its best not to mix gpus if you can avoid it. For whatever reason they like to play along better together if thy are the same family ex 2x 6970's vs 1x 6970+1x7970 You should still be able to get some life out of your 6970 and when the new 8xxx's come out buy another 6970 and crush xfire

haha luc, we shall see.
I am pretty happy with the graphics card and will probably stick with it for a good while. It will probably be a long time before I grab another card. I also only have a 750 watt psu so not sure it will be able to handle two

If anything, wait for the 9xxx series to come out (so that the 8xxx ones are cheap by then). I bought a laptop a couple days ago from some guy who works at AMD. He said that the 8xxx series are supposed to be a major improvement.

Honestly as the years have passed I have been spending less and less on video cards. I used to have a budget of 200ish 6 years ago. This last video card my budget was close to $100. If it wasn't for luc I would probably still be running the 5750 I had in here, that was giving me issues when it was overclocked.

I used to cheap out on the video card, but you just can't do that if you want full HD graphics. Especially with the CPU's that can be overclocked really well for a good price, so now I budget more for a video card. I plan on spending about 400 - 500 on a video card when I do upgrade, but I just end up selling my old one which usually cuts the price of the new card I'm buying down by 200.

I finally got rid of my gts 250 for 60$, but that was by luck as it has been up for sale for almost a year.

I know. I used to have a 5850 in CF with a 5990 and you did notice the micro stutter. The 6990 is two 6970's glued together, so I will have 3 6970's with (2gbx3) 6gb of ram.

Ack!
Guys remember it's not always total wattage, you have to check to see which 12v lines have how much amperage, to be able to handle whatever you're plugging them into.
If your PSU has 4x 12v lines, and you use only 1 to rig up all your hard drives and the dedicated graphics power line is also on the same rail, then you will have problems.
Double check how its spread out among the rails if you have multiple rails.
If your PSU has 1 rail, then whatever, doesn't matter.
550watts is PLENTY to run many of your systems, if it's a quality unit.

My Seasonic is a single rail unit with 104 amps or something like that.
Quality PSU's are definately a good investment.
Also, I tried to boot my PC with this new PSU and turns out its something else thats fried. Either the Motherboard or CPU.
I have to stop making money pits my hobby.

550watts is PLENTY to run many of your systems, if it's a quality unit. 550w is actually the bare minimum for a lot of computers with power hungry video cards and a little bit of overclocking, even then you don't want to run a power supply at 100% constantly, or else you will have to replace it a lot more often from what I understand. There was this website I saw on an overclockers forum where you picked from a list and type in a bunch of stuff, like amount of case fans, the size of the fans, cpu, overclock speed etc. And it would tell you the minimum PSU you required. I think mine was around 480. I went with the 850w Corsair, from my research, Corsair is one of the better psu companies, not as good as Seasonic, but up there.

You really have to read up on the specific model of PSU you want to buy. You can't really stack it up to the brand name anymore, because depending on the model they may have used a different manufacturer. There are many joint venture products. All of those big names have used Seasonic to build their PSUs before, good units, and a couple of other reliable names. Then again, each of those big names have built really bad PSUs. So just read before you buy. I hate that there's always a bunch of different revisions, etc., for products these days. Sometimes a different revision could mean a completely different product with the same damn name/model. Those PSU calculators calculate peak draw on the PSUs. No computer hits and sustains peak draw for long, unless you're using it for FOLDING or some intense calculations that you do for the hell of it. Even playing video games your computer won't be at peak very often. BUT of course it's good to give yourself some headroom and go with a higher rated PSU. If you overclock that also adds to the power draw, but if you don't you're fine. Hard drives do not draw much power, so even with up to 4 or even 5 in one case, you're fine with a solid 550watt power supply. Depends on all of the components. Anyways, we could go on for days about this. Haha. Just buy sh!t on sale!

IMO, the first thing you need to read when it comes to PSU reviews are from www.jonnyguru.com . He's a lot more thorough when it comes to PSU compared to other "reviewers". When it comes to draw, my HTPC (my old gaming PC) draws 523+ watts from the wall (according to my watt-o-meter). My current gaming pc (3930x, (2) 6950's, (2) SSD's, (4) HD, etc) draws 527+ watts (using the same watt-o-meter). Both playing BF3. It draws higher with prime 95/MSI afterburner. Those power draws uses the same components except the CPU + Mobo. But i do agree with all of Michael's points.

Picked up that 6990. Thing is relatively large. Also, that 6950 has been reflashed with a 6970 BIOS.

Awesome you can still do that sorta thing with AMD cards eh? Haha! Joe> you're right, that guy's a guru for sure, he ACTUALLY tests the units, instead of the typical "it felt solid, great PSU, with blinky lights, and good fan." "reviews". Remember when you could flash a vanilla ATI 9500 card to a 9700, that was BANG for your buck for sure! Nowadays everything is so "fast" and good out of the box, there isn't much tinkering or fun you can have with 'em. Even the CPUs, motherboards, and RAM. They all just kinda work, and overclock, no fuss, no muss. BORING.

It really is. All of the 6950's with 2gb are actually 6970.
Everything is very fast these days, and new hardware is designed to use predictions. So when gaming, the computer thinks ahead to make everything smoother.
Only problem for me is I've got an eyeinfinity setup, which gives me a resolution a bit over (due to bezel compensation) 5760*1080 which is a major strain graphics wise.

Saying that everything now is "fast enough" is like saying a DSM is fast enough stock We all know there's room to push these systems. Here's a question, does running a dual monitor setup off the same card cause frame loss issues? And also, can I run one monitor off my main video card and one off my onboard one?

The parts at stock clocks are fast enough for the average user using one screen. Most people are too computer illiterate to even adjust their graphics settings high enough to cause lag.
If only two screens for productivity, you won't notice a difference. Unless you have something like an Intel GMA 9xx series onboard card, then you might sometimes notice your computer is slowing down.
Gaming with 2 screens is an awful idea because you are looking directly at the frames of the two screens and will feel crosseyed. Also, if using it for FPS games, your crosshairs will be lost in the middle.
For now, you must run all displays off of your primary card, but I'd hope they change it.
Running a game off only one screen and having a second plugged in only viewing the Internet or something will stress the CPU more than the video card. You shouldn't notice any frame rate issues doing this. (Used to do this in the Pentium II era)

Not sure, but I think he meant dual monitors, but not in "eyefinity" mode.
Running dual screens, not merged together as a single screen, but multiple monitor mode, will slow frame rates in games, but very slightly.
You won't notice performance issues.
You might lose a few frames here and there, because your videocard has to paint the unused monitor's screen even though it's not displaying the 3D graphics on that one.
As for there being room to push these systems, yes, but that's if you're a benchmarker.
Who builds machines just to benchmark these days? I hope not too many, haha.
If a game is already running at 40+FPS and without having the frame count displayed on the screen, it feels smooth, then what's the point of pushing the system to run faster?
Kinda like running an First-person shooter game from 120fps to 160fps. Sure it runs faster, but will you feel it? No.
It's not like the old days where every bit of performance counts, and was needed.
Now you can run stuff stock, and it will run great, of course depending on the class of hardware.

It's not on the floor It's on the bottom wooden desk thing, and also this case has feet, so the case is always an inch off of the surface of what it's sitting on, it also has a little screen vent thing that is removable for cleaning so it doesn't clog up the air flow for my psu

Haha, I just don't like computer towers with many fans to be near the ground, because that's where all the dust kicks up. I like mine on my desk or a raised platform beside my desk. Like one of those low side tables from Ikea, they work perfectly.

Dust covers for the bottom always work.
With my old build, I had black light cathodes underneath the case, so when someone with white socks stood near it, they would light up. Worked great on an HAF 932 case with the wheels, to raise it off the floor as much as possible.

I read that some people use dryer thingies as air filters on their fans. Anyone ever try that?

Bryan, I'd think that would block too much air.
Hold one up and try to blow through it. Even after using it in the dryer, it still blocks too much air.
The mesh filters are pretty restrictive too, but not as much as a dryer sheet.
I wouldn't.

What do you guys use, I only have one filter on my front fan that came with the case. So I wanted to filter my other fans.

Maybe even Canada Computers. I miss BigFoot computers. They were overpriced, but had all the specialty stuff.

Just use screen door stuff, cut a square, and either glue it to the fan and force the screws through If you want to prevent most dirt from entering your case, you should probably try to get something with smaller holes than wire mesh, though that is a great idea if you're not too worried about it and plan on using compressed air once every month or two to keep things clean inside. I can snap a pic of what I have in my case (and show you my beast at the same time) later tonight to give you an idea of what I used. It's basically low density porous foam kinda like this. Works wonders and allows massive airflow, easy to trim to fit in all openings and can be rinsed in water when cleaning. It's technically OEM-or-better quality depending on what case you have kicking around.

Dang thats nice!
Just picked up a ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboard and a AMD FX-8350 CPU. Apparently people have hit 4.9-5.0Ghz on this 8-core CPU and motherboard combo. Aren't AMDominating shipping chips with a factory 5.0 now?

Who cares? AMD naturally runs hotter and slower, lol. Their 8 core under performs in comparison to the i7. AMD doesn't hold a flame to Intel these days. The i7 and i5 are owning face. AMD is decent, but they just don't compare.

They are slower than high end intel chips, however, performance per dollar amd is better. It mainly because they don't have a good architecture.
I've never had any problems with their processors and I don't do any serious benchmarking so AMD is perfect.
Also, my flight sim now has 8 core support so this CPU should be perfect.

Well the issue that I have with AMD is they push all these big numbers, but they don't perform well at all. A stock i5 3570k out performs it in every application, and it runs at 3.4ghz. I paid $215 for my i5 3570k. Even the i5 2550k out performs it.
AMD says you get more for your buck, but they don't really perform well. Granted, this is at very high end levels. Where the 8350 lags behind quite a bit, but also when I say lag behind, I mean it's getting like 90fps where the i5 is getting 130, so either way you wont notice it.

Brandon that mouse and keyboard is beautiful! I haven't replaced my keyboard for almost 8+ years, and probably won't. I have spilled a ton of stuff on it and have taken it apart and cleaned it and it goes back to working like it did before. I will probably replace my mouse some time soon, should I stay wireless or is wired the way to go?

Do you not have a decent onboard one? I'm trying to run my ventrilo through just my headset, nothing else through the headset. But the only way I can do that, is apparently either a usb connector, which for some reason makes my microphone sound deep, or through a pci sound card. If anyone knows of any other ways, let me know.

I will probably replace my mouse some time soon, should I stay wireless or is wired the way to go? Thanks! I really spent a ton of money on my keyboard and mouse setup but I didn't want anything cheap that will die in a year from extensive use. Every Microsoft mouse I have purchased, the left or right click end up going after about a year. And membrane keyboard, to me just don't cut it anymore. I picked up the keyboard on sale for I believe it was $100 (normally 139.99) and I picked up the mouse on sale for 79.99 (normally 94.99). As for the wired vs wireless debate, I tried wireless for a couple years and I really found it to be more of a hassle than a benefit. So I ended up going back to wired, and I haven't even thought twice about it. There are some mice now that you can unplug the usb from it and it will be wireless for when you need it, but you plug the cable in it to the front when you don't.

Are both the keyboard and mouse Razer? Nope, I'm going to pick up a Razer mouse in the near future I think but for now my Logitech G9X has been amazing, it's comfortable, has a low slanted design and is very comfortable. The headset and the keyboard are both Razer though.

my keyboard is the zboard, i was trying to grab the model but it seems it's discontinued now. It's the one where you can swap out the keyboard. It's more of a novelty thing now, I don't remember the last time I have switched.
I think I will pick up a Razer mouse eventually.

Thanks!
The power supply being fully modular really helped, along with all the room on the other side of the case to hide all the cables.

Nice catch! Stephan why did you decide to put the CPU fan at the top?

I caught that one too after I took the picture. Thank you for the heads up though!
CPU fan went uptop because its a Corsair H100, so it's rad requires two spots.

Nice, the 760 is a solid card for a great price.

I haven't been watching the hardware scene that much lately but I did notice AMD has a 4Ghz octo core cpu now, I think a winter upgrade is in order If you like AMD, look into the 8350. I got mine overclocked to 4.5ghz and it's stable and happy.

Nice, the 760 is a solid card for a great price. I got it for $250 after tax. Pretty good value i think. I have it clocked now to 1280. Well #$@% me sideways. This is just a reminder that you can never win or keep up with computer hardware these days. I recently bought a GTX 660 for 299, I think it was, before the 760's were released, but I could've waited. Had no idea they'd be priced so well. They're quite a bit faster than the 660 as well. I get 60fps pretty steady in BF4, never drops below 50.. and the only difference is our processor. i5 3570k is the best bang for your buck.

I have always been an amd chip guy but for video cards I was always invidia. It wasn't until Luc convinced me otherwise. I can't really comment on the overclocking though cause I over clocked my 5750 which was working great but as soon as I added my second monitor it start shitting. With the 6970 that I have now I couldn't be happier the thing is a beast, atleast compared to the 5750. Also my chip I just ditched (6000+) was doing really well and it was only when I tried the witcher 2 that it started choking and I think it was the motherboard holding the video card back too.

I see alot of AMD hate, here's the deal. For whatever reason I find intel works better with nvidia and AMD works well with its family. I've seen and been contradicted to this a couple of times but for me I like to match.
I've done the intel game and the AMD game, Nvidia and AMD.
Right now i have a 1190T and a HD7970. I CRUSH everything at full tilt and thats an older processor. Bulldozer isnt a requirement for me right now but I will admit to being a GPU whore.
When people say the i5's outpreform bulldozers. Maybe your right, and MAYBE they were VERY competitively priced that you ended up siding with intel.
when you say outperform you MUST be referring to the countless benchmarks that YOU have run personally and NOT the benchmarks found on popular sites that use reference samples naturally......
AMD products overclock EXTREMELY well, as well as intel/nvidia but lets face it you couldn't overclock or bios flash a 660-670 to a 690...........a 7970 CAN.
I don't overclock at all other than a bios flash for my gpu but the fact that my processor is STILL 3-4 (?) years old and crushing ALL modern games on a 42" on full tilt kinda puts the "i5 preforms better than bulldozers in the same price range" argument out the window.
If you notice any difference in performance then thats something else BUT I still have a min 30 fps while playing metro last light and the new BF4 beta.
keeping in mind my current processor is around the 100$ range REALLY puts things into perspective.
Keep in mind this is SOLELY about gaming
don't flame for fanboy because I've had both sets mixed and un mixed. I sold off my 680 sc (evgta) on this board because it was not what I had expected for such a pricey piece of hardware
^^ This. Someone who knows something through tinkering and experience instead of online benchmarks. I've had many setups as well, and when it comes to playing games, hey as long as it's smooth gameplay, numbers don't matter. I've had setups where the max frame count, and cpu benchmarks were top notch, but game play was jittery even with the high frame count. This compared with a middle of the pack spec'ed machine that played games smoothly. Sometimes it's the driver releases, and not the hardware's fault. It all depends, but once you've found your perfect setup, it's difficult to move onto new stuff, because you've gotta start all over again. It used to be fun, now it's a hassle.
