I'm gauging interest in possibly doing a group buy to Jacks for EVOIII taller 5th gears. I do not know whether or not there will be a discount, but at the very least we can combine the shipping on this item. The EvoIII 5th gear is 10% taller, which results in a higher overall top speed, but more importantly for us DDs and cruisers, a lower cruising RPM. Lower cruising RPM = less gas = longer cruise The gears are currently listed at $230/set http://www.jackstransmissions.com/collections/trans-parts/products/evoiii-5th-gearMore information can be found here. http://www.jackstransmissions.com/collections/trans-parts/products/evoiii-5th-gearThe install is incredibly easy as the tranny doesn't even have to leave the vehicle. Pull the end cover off, slap on the gears, and away you go. (yes, it's obviously more involved then that, but the point is, the tranny can stay in the car.)

Gotta pass on this now that I'm getting that TRE Taller 5th, unless we end up getting some ridiculous pricing, but still 90% likely out.

You're gonna want something that doesn't require taking apart the transmission for installation, ideally, the TRE gear does.
That being said, getting gears made isn't hard, it's just not necessarily cheap, either.

I have the Evo III 5th and I accomplished 8L/100km from Saskatoon to Calgary with plenty of 170ish passes and a typical cruising speed of 117kph, without cruise control, and about 400lb in the car that I typically don't have.
So, pretend I would have had 10L/100km with the stock gear, 1200km both ways - it would have been an extra 24L @ 1.31 - $31.44 savings in that single trip.
This gear is a really good investment if you ever use fifth on a regular basis, it will simply pay for itself.

Definately drain the gear oil before taking the cover off Also sometimes the 5th intermediate gear slides right off, sometimes a little prying gets it off, worst case scenario you will need a gear puller.

Still no word on final price? I'd be interested if it was like 200 flat shipped. Not that my car will be seeing 5th gear very much soon though. Lol
I have an evo3 1st and love it btw. You would have boost for a long time with a smaller turbo in 1st.

Which isn't all that bad in price considering the savings on fuel later on.
So who's in? I want this thing to get going so we can have a for-sure order made and have these shipped as there will be some wait on them getting from the backorder process.
1. Johnny Larmond x2. (have 2 cars, can't pick favorites . ) 2. Guillaume Berton x2 but I'll need help installing it 3. Alex Ak ???? 4. Mike Eng ???? 5. Terry S (All about the benjamins) ???? 6. Bryan L (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ???? 7. Henri Masse (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ???? 8. Nick Gallo (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ???? 9. Jamie Valcamp ???? 10.Pedro Suarez (Depending on what the final price comes to and when, but probably) ???? 11.Mike Kuttz- lets see the $$ ????
Just erase the ???? so we know you're in for sure as the price is now a certainty.

Yeah that's a good call Stephen, I am going to call monday.
Part number is MR581018 and MR581020/mn107624 Don't quote me on the part numbers, the ASA diagrams are not easy to read, but I am pretty sure these are the ones. the first is output, the second is input (said it could be either) I was looking at 2001 year, so if that's wrong let me know.

I just looked up those part numbers, and I can't BUY them for anywhere near that price, so you would pay a LOT more through a Canadian dealership. If your supplier is willing to ship by USPS, that is the way to go.

Seeing as we're on this subject anyway, how much do evo 3 trannies go for?
EDIT: Nevermind. They're expensive. Better to get the guts from somewhere and do your own frankenstein I think.

Looks like I may have been wrong, here are the ones I found from searching.
input shaft gear - MD743980 intermediate shaft gear - MD743319
Some guy names twicks69 keep coming up, from what I read he has an account with Mitsubishi Japan, but usually keeps a good amount of stock. If he does order stuff it takes a while because it comes on a boat.
From what I am reading Jack's looks like the way to go, some of the prices I have seen in the past 3 years (from posts) are north of $300 for the 2 gears. Tashko on this board used to get the set for $370

Those numbers don't seem to come up as valid North American numbers, they PROBABLY have to come from Mitsu in Japan. I could POSSIBLY get them, but would take forever by boat as you mentioned.

Now imagine your doing a full rebuild with new gears, hubs/sliders, bearings and syncros. Yup, tranny parts and PROPER rebuilds are not cheap!

Unfortunately I just don't have the time to build trannies anymore so anyone wanting one will need to look elsewhere or ship to the US. I'm sure the SERIOUS guys don't mind shipping to the 2-3 big DSM tranny builders in the US, so they still have that option if needed. You could also still find a trans from a JDM distributor for $400-$500 bucks if needed. There are a few guys on this board who can build transmissions too, however they'll need to chime in for themselves

I'm in at about $2500 for my Jack's rebuild with HD gearset, considering the parts and labor, I find it was a fair price. I am happy with the results though, it shifts like no other tranny I've even driven, well worth the cost to ship it to Jacks. We should all be glad we're not looking at $6k+ for a stock GT-R rebuild!

Yes! just in time for winter projects. LOL maybe for you guys, I do most of my work during the summer, only maintenance and necessities get handled in the winter. My driving season starts when all of yours ends!

Who are you calling "you guys"?! 3 winters and going strong in my GSX But regardless, I can't see this install taking more then an afternoon which will include the lost lives of many brave beers.

Forgot that you year round the GSX, the winter project comment through me off! Yeah that doesn't sound too bad, just worried about potential hicups. Now that I have a spare tranny debating on whether I should swap it.

I never thought that would be an issue, the nuts are inside the tranny and are covered in oil all the time. Is there usually issues with them?

Never reuse a peen nut. You will be picking through the ditch looking for your new 5th gear nd what is left of your side case as you wait for the tow truck. Peen nuts are 1 time use. Ya; those suckers are worth like $5... Much better to replace than trash a few hunderds bucks or a few Ks. Ghislain

Boy oh boy do I ever have some UBER shitty news for everyone who wanted to participate..... And there's no easy way to say it, so out it comes.... I gave my contact from Jack's, Tim, a heads up that I'll be placing an order for 11 EVO3 5th gear sets, and 22 end nuts in a weeks time. He then responded with; "John, We have a big problem… Mitsubishi just discontinued the EVOIII 5th gear sets. We are frantically trying to located any remaining sets in Japan and the UK to complete our outstanding builds and to fill your request. We will be removing these items from our website. If we can find a suitable replacement or if Mitsubishi decides to do another production run, I will let you know. We just found out about this yesterday… Thanks, Tim" Sooooo... in finishing.... I'll keep you all in the loop if anything new develops in the upcoming weeks.

I would hope that Johnny got the last one, there is no one on here that would get more value out of it than he.

John, I am pretty sure you knew we were getting them, and pretty sure I had told you the price (which was a LOT higher than what was mentioned earlier in this thread).
The last one, I have been asked to hold it for a week. IF the buyer backs out, I will post again here.

Paul, did you find those nuts.
No rush, I don't think any of us are installing them until spring.
