I'm gauging interest in possibly doing a group buy to Jacks for EVOIII taller 5th gears.
I do not know whether or not there will be a discount, but at the very least we can combine the shipping on this item.
The EvoIII 5th gear is 10% taller, which results in a higher overall top speed, but more importantly for us DDs and cruisers, a lower cruising RPM. Lower cruising RPM = less gas = longer cruise laugh

The gears are currently listed at $230/set
http://www.jackstransmissions.com/collections/trans-parts/products/evoiii-5th-gear

More information can be found here.
http://www.jackstransmissions.com/collections/trans-parts/products/evoiii-5th-gear

The install is incredibly easy as the tranny doesn't even have to leave the vehicle. Pull the end cover off, slap on the gears, and away you go. (yes, it's obviously more involved then that, but the point is, the tranny can stay in the car.)

Same gearing from 1g and 2g right? I may be interested in this for both of mine. When do you expect to buy them?

The gear is compatible with all FWD and AWD trannies for 90-99 DSM/EVOs. Direct swap!

Sounds interesting, but I'd need to get my bitch running first.

The cost is reasonable.

Did Jack get back to you on a group buy price? I've been running the tall 5th for a few years now. The lower rpm is nice for long cruises smile

If this does fit the fwd tranny, not sure they'll benefit much as they already have a taller 5th gear vs awd. If your fwd probably not worth the cost, might be something like 100 rpms difference (its been a long time since I was fwd)

I have the evoIII in my TRE tranny as well. I'm right around 3K @ 120kph. Think its around 400rpm this drops vs stock awd gear.

Gotta pass on this now that I'm getting that TRE Taller 5th, unless we end up getting some ridiculous pricing, but still 90% likely out.

Makes me wonder whether or not we can get someone to make those gears..... Hmmmmmmmm 10% is great, 25% is a LOT (I know my oil pressure is pretty low at 2000rpm), but 20% would be minty fresh.

You're gonna want something that doesn't require taking apart the transmission for installation, ideally, the TRE gear does.

That being said, getting gears made isn't hard, it's just not necessarily cheap, either.

Exactly. I'll do a little research and see what I can come up with. I'm still interested in the evo gearset. Haven't heard back yet. I'll try again on Monday.

I have the Evo III 5th and I accomplished 8L/100km from Saskatoon to Calgary with plenty of 170ish passes and a typical cruising speed of 117kph, without cruise control, and about 400lb in the car that I typically don't have.

So, pretend I would have had 10L/100km with the stock gear, 1200km both ways - it would have been an extra 24L @ 1.31 - $31.44 savings in that single trip.

This gear is a really good investment if you ever use fifth on a regular basis, it will simply pay for itself.

Just heard back!

On orders of 10+, the gears at 205USD/set. (savings of $25 with the sale price) They're currently on backorder, so once the order is places, it could take a couple weeks to full.

Lets restart the list and put a ye or ne to your names if you're ok with that price.

Never asked tongue First gear will require a whole rebuild, but the 5th is a simple case of pulling the cover off and swapping out the gears with everything installed except for the passenger side wheel and the splash guard tongue I don't think you even have to drain the fluid! (might be wrong on the fluid part...)

You don't...but be prepared for it to all come rushing out when you take off that end cover. If tranny fluid showers are your thing, then definitely don't drain it smile rotate

Definately drain the gear oil before taking the cover off smile Also sometimes the 5th intermediate gear slides right off, sometimes a little prying gets it off, worst case scenario you will need a gear puller.

I just bought a Jacks 2.2 S-HD and they said the Evo III 5th was on backorder and they couldn't tell me when it would arrive so I opted for the standard gear because I want my new TRANNY!

So if this GB is a go I am in!

Still no word on final price? I'd be interested if it was like 200 flat shipped. Not that my car will be seeing 5th gear very much soon though. Lol

I have an evo3 1st and love it btw. You would have boost for a long time with a smaller turbo in 1st.

10 units would be 100us shipped up here. So the finally price for 10 units would be 215USD each.

MIND YOU, this would be to my address in Richmond hill which is pretty central I think, at least for Ontario.

Which isn't all that bad in price considering the savings on fuel later on.

So who's in? I want this thing to get going so we can have a for-sure order made and have these shipped as there will be some wait on them getting from the backorder process.

1. Johnny Larmond x2. (have 2 cars, can't pick favorites . )
2. Guillaume Berton x2 but I'll need help installing it
3. Alex Ak ????
4. Mike Eng ????
5. Terry S (All about the benjamins) ????
6. Bryan L (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ????
7. Henri Masse (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ????
8. Nick Gallo (Depending on what the final price comes to, but probably) ????
9. Jamie Valcamp ????
10.Pedro Suarez (Depending on what the final price comes to and when, but probably) ????
11.Mike Kuttz- lets see the $$ ????

Just erase the ???? so we know you're in for sure as the price is now a certainty.

I highly doubt there is any way to guarantee. RTM has to charge tax for their items opposed to getting them right from the us seller where there is a chance of not having to pay tax.
Correct me if I'm wrong here....

This might be a dumb question...has anyone got the part number and called a local dealer to see if they can get them? Back in the day we used to order JDM type R cams right from Honda canada.

Yeah that's a good call Stephen, I am going to call monday.

Part number is MR581018 and MR581020/mn107624
Don't quote me on the part numbers, the ASA diagrams are not easy to read, but I am pretty sure these are the ones. the first is output, the second is input (said it could be either)
I was looking at 2001 year, so if that's wrong let me know.

Just saying, because we did a group buy on shirts at work. And each order was an extra 7$. Would hate to see the extra costs on the gears if there are any duties... the penny pinchers here may loose their sh!t...

I just looked up those part numbers, and I can't BUY them for anywhere near that price, so you would pay a LOT more through a Canadian dealership. If your supplier is willing to ship by USPS, that is the way to go.

Let me know if you can find a better price. I doubt it seeing as they wanted to charge me $40 for a key.......
I'm all for cheaper tough! Lt me know what you can find. I can't imagine the package will weigh all that much.
I'll ask how they ship. FedEx or USPS and I'm all happy

Seeing as we're on this subject anyway, how much do evo 3 trannies go for?

EDIT: Nevermind. They're expensive. Better to get the guts from somewhere and do your own frankenstein I think.

Looks like I may have been wrong, here are the ones I found from searching.

input shaft gear - MD743980
intermediate shaft gear - MD743319

Some guy names twicks69 keep coming up, from what I read he has an account with Mitsubishi Japan, but usually keeps a good amount of stock. If he does order stuff it takes a while because it comes on a boat.

From what I am reading Jack's looks like the way to go, some of the prices I have seen in the past 3 years (from posts) are north of $300 for the 2 gears. Tashko on this board used to get the set for $370

Those numbers don't seem to come up as valid North American numbers, they PROBABLY have to come from Mitsu in Japan. I could POSSIBLY get them, but would take forever by boat as you mentioned.

Now imagine your doing a full rebuild with new gears, hubs/sliders, bearings and syncros. Yup, tranny parts and PROPER rebuilds are not cheap!

Too bad there is no one on THIS side of the border doing rebuilds for those few serious guys who ARE willing to pay the money...

Unfortunately I just don't have the time to build trannies anymore so anyone wanting one will need to look elsewhere or ship to the US.

I'm sure the SERIOUS guys don't mind shipping to the 2-3 big DSM tranny builders in the US, so they still have that option if needed. You could also still find a trans from a JDM distributor for $400-$500 bucks if needed.

There are a few guys on this board who can build transmissions too, however they'll need to chime in for themselves smile

There probably IS no US part number, since the EVO 3 was not sold in the US.

I'm in at about $2500 for my Jack's rebuild with HD gearset, considering the parts and labor, I find it was a fair price. I am happy with the results though, it shifts like no other tranny I've even driven, well worth the cost to ship it to Jacks.

We should all be glad we're not looking at $6k+ for a stock GT-R rebuild!

PS I take it we wire you the money before we get the parts right? Just need to know so I don't spend everything and keep enough on the side for that time.

I get your money before I order your part. I don't have 2300 just kicking around to make a giant clock with in case someone backs out tongue

When I get a finalized list, I'll put up the total shipped price before Duty/tax. You'll have to pay your share of that before you get your gearz.

I typically use www.xe.com to determine the dollar value difference from CDN to USD. But in this case, I would suggest getting the TOTAL AMOUNT from them and letting us know so we don't end up short...or high.

GAME PLAN
rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate rotate

I'll be taking the money, but not yet. I'm giving until the end of the month to finalize the list, and then all participating parties will have from November 1st until the 10th to send me their portion which will be determined at that time. The order WILL be placed on November 11th, no exceptions.

I will be notifying everyone via PM who are taking part on the first of the final amount due before duty+tax (if any)
Upon receiving the package, I will notify everyone of the balance outstanding/set. Balance due will have to be paid before you get your gears.
If you want it shipped to you, it will be additional as the package will be coming to me in Richmond Hill (Pretty central I imagine)

All of you with job have 2 more paycheques at least to save ~230. And for those of you without, stop being a hippie! tongue

Put it under your mattress, put it in your sock drawer, I don't care. Save up because you don't want miss the boat!

Just a thought, we may want consider adding in the two large shaft nuts for each order. Or at least as an option.
Always good practice to replace these guys.

Forgot that you year round the GSX, the winter project comment through me off! Yeah that doesn't sound too bad, just worried about potential hicups. Now that I have a spare tranny debating on whether I should swap it.

I never thought that would be an issue, the nuts are inside the tranny and are covered in oil all the time.
Is there usually issues with them?

The reason you'd want to change these nuts is because 1) They are 'punch to lock' ie you punch the side tab in once the nut is torqued to spec. and 2) They are only a couple bucks each.

Yes, you CAN reuse them if you really want (as long as they're not irreparably damaged), but considering they are holding everything together and they're only a couple bucks each, you'll want to replace them.

Never reuse a peen nut. You will be picking through the ditch looking for your new 5th gear nd what is left of your side case as you wait for the tow truck. Peen nuts are 1 time use.

Ya; those suckers are worth like $5... Much better to replace than trash a few hunderds bucks or a few Ks.

I am still waiting on my buddy to get back to me on pricing.... seems he is waiting on Mitsu japan to see if he can get them.

And if anyone is on the fence about installing them I can do it for $80 here at my house. If I have to go mobile there will be an extra charge depending on distance

I'm just waiting to hear back about a price on the nut.
Providing there are 10+, the price is $215US for the gears, shipped to my address in Richmond Hill. This is before any tax or duty that the package incurs as it crosses the boarder.

I can do the same for people in Toronto/GTA/etc. if people are not interested in making the trip out to KW.

Didn't know I had to specify but yes, the nut is something I will need as well.

Are these coming from the same place or are we sourcing them out else where?

I haven't heard back wrt the end nuts, but they're $6.62 each, and you'll be needing 2 of them. So, I'm going to suggest adding $15 on to the orders. Extra for potential added shipping costs.

I believe Jack's sells them for $6/piece? Maybe less...I've ordered them before, just can't seem to find and line item for them on any of my Jack's orders.

There's a post one page back with all the info you need. Fairly easy to find, given all the colours and animations that Johnny put into it.

Boy oh boy do I ever have some UBER shitty news for everyone who wanted to participate..... And there's no easy way to say it, so out it comes....
I gave my contact from Jack's, Tim, a heads up that I'll be placing an order for 11 EVO3 5th gear sets, and 22 end nuts in a weeks time. He then responded with;
"John,

We have a big problem… Mitsubishi just discontinued the EVOIII 5th gear sets. We are frantically trying to located any remaining sets in Japan and the UK to complete our outstanding builds and to fill your request.
We will be removing these items from our website. If we can find a suitable replacement or if Mitsubishi decides to do another production run, I will let you know. We just found out about this yesterday…

Thanks,
Tim"

Sooooo... in finishing.... mad bomb weep
cry

I'll keep you all in the loop if anything new develops in the upcoming weeks.

Let's all book a flight to japan and visit plant/production manager. They probably don't even know what evo 5th does to our DSMs

We managed to get our hands on THREE sets. Our newest supplier in the UK says he has more on order, but seeing is believing. Gui and Mike Eng were here today and took two of the three. That last set should make it into the webstore shortly.

The LAST set of these is now spoken for. If we DO get our hands on any more, I will post again here.

I would hope that Johnny got the last one, there is no one on here that would get more value out of it than he.

Apparently it pays to frequent the RTM forums.

I say pay because the savings I'll get using this gear. My driving is at least 90% highway. And didn't even know Ziggy had these. Just lucky really.

Sorry Johnny. If you weren't MIA all weekend, maybe you'd be enjoying a lower exhaust note in fifth gear on the highway.. Like G and me tongue.

So who got the last one?

John, I am pretty sure you knew we were getting them, and pretty sure I had told you the price (which was a LOT higher than what was mentioned earlier in this thread).

The last one, I have been asked to hold it for a week. IF the buyer backs out, I will post again here.
