Ive been recently trying to find a somewhat solid motor to swap into my 2g as i am currently burning oil...have searched around to find out whether i currently have a short or long block...also what is required if you go from taking out a short block and putting in a long block vice versa

Background info before some of you start questioning my reasoning for the swap:

-I am still planning to do a compression and leak down test and the results could eliminate the idea of swapping if it is a minor fix as to the cause of the burning oil

-the reason i am looking to swap is i want to get a somewhat solid used motor which i will refresh with the complete timing belt job kit and complete gasket seal kit new head arp head studs

-that motor will be dropped in to make my 2g a reliable daily driver which i can put some bolt on upgrades aiming to get around 300-350hp out of that

-with the original motor i plan to completely disassemble it and very slowly begin to rebuild it in hopes to one day make around 500hp and i emphasize the length of time i plan to take with that as i know it will cost an arm and a leg (few years) would hope to do an awd swap around the time i would hope to drop this motor in

- i am open to selling the original and trying to get a 6 bolt to rebuild if it comes with a transmission (just put a brand new flywheel, clutch, pp for my 7 bolt)

I think you're a bit confused about the terms... "longblock" vs. "shortblock" is just a quick way of indicating how much of the engine is included in the sale.

"longblock" generally means you're getting the block and head together. You'll usually (but not always) get the valve cover and the oil pan. Sometimes you'll get the timing belt components and intake / exhaust manifolds, etc.

"shortblock" is just the block with no head (and hence no cams, no valve cover no manifolds no timing belt stuff, etc)

Somes times you'll see sales for a "bare block" (no pistons, rods, bearings, etc) or a "bare head" (no valvetrain).

The terms are a little squishy so definitely ask the seller exactly what's included.

Either way I'd definitely recommend you try to fix what you have first before going down the engine build road. wink
