The taller VR4 1st gear is known to be the weakest and can break easily (I have broken them). The rest of the gears are single syncro and the 3-4 is heavy duty just like any other 1990 transmission. I ran many 10 second passes on the exact same transmission and have blown the same transmission up. Same could be done on a stock 2g tranny, 1g tranny, evo3 gearset etc. In a perfect world sure it could handle 500HP, but I don't really assign HP ratings to a tranny unless I build it myself now. There are other factors involved so I can't really tell you how good or how crap that 25 year old transmission is What I can say is sure the 3-4 gears are heavy duty and can handle pretty much anything you throw at them as long as they are in good shape.
