So, I've been thinking ( I know, dangerous thought lol) Are we predisposed to like these specific cars? Is it a disease only some of us get? Heck I love other cars don't get me wrong, but my heart always brings me back to DSMs to the point I want to own a 3rd Even rich I'd still own a few, possibly convert one to hydrogen/electricity in the future, just because of the timeless exterior design. Do we have a fungus in our brain that makes us come back to these time and time again? Or is it simply for cost/looks/power there's nothing that compares?

I think that's a legit concern.
I had a chance to choose whatever I wanted after I gave up on blue but I stayed in the family. I think for me though it was this board that kept me in the dsm family and maybe the familiarity of the car. And agreed on the last one, it's hard to find something that you can do so much with without spending double.
New things are always scary!

For me, it was all about accessibility, ease of mods/working on/maintenance, and the community. Our Canadian DSM community is one of the better/best car groups out there for the most part. We may not be the most active but almost everyone is a stand-up character.
I wouldn't get rid of my DSMs and sure, if I had the space and the money why not grab more, but there are many other cars I'd rather buy next even though I always will have a soft spot for a nice, clean DSM.

+1 on all those comments but for me it was walking down that street circa 1992, I was probably like 15 years old and there was a red 1G sitting on the street with the words "TSI AWD Turbo" written on the side. I thought WHAAT!!? That has to be the coolest car ever!!! Had to have one.
Jump forward to 1996 and I bought a beat up, rebuilt 1991 AWD Talon. Drove it like it was stolen for 3 years, never let me down in a race or otherwise and never forgot that feeling.
PS. Also test drive a 1992 AWD Laser Around the same time. MINT! Sniff, sniff, should have bought it. If only I knew...

Once you go DSM you never go back! When you coming back? Or just going to stick to living vicariously through Danny?

Agreed, everyone here is awesome, and the Shootout is like a family reunion without the drama. for example: I had a break in the summer, and a member that I helped out probably 8 years ago who no longer even has a dsm and haven't talked to much, came out of nowhere and hooked me up with the parts I needed in less than 48hrs of breaking. You don't find that too many other places.

for me it was a lucky find with my 2g, went and checked out a couple R33 skylines and this one midnight purple GTR was almost in my possession and then my silver one popped up. i think its the looks of the car that keeps bringing me back to it, i'll always have a dsm in my driveway!!

Funny, I haven't heard of the DSM bug being referred to as a disease before. I heard of BMW disease in Germany in the '80s, but that was what they called it if you were pouring out blue oil smoke. I had a 5 cylinder Audi for 6 months where I always had to say "fill the oil and check the gas", and they told me it had BMW disease.

Yeah I tried getting away from DSMs... Twice. And both times I had another one end up in my possession within a year or less. So I just accepted that I'll never be able to separate myself from them, and am happy to own one. It's always the 1g's for me that do it. I've driven all sorts of cars and been in many. Even daily driving my evo, all summer, which does absolutely everything better than my stock DSM, doesn't feel the same. I sit in my 1g, and automatically feel "at home". And it's the only car I've ever had that feeling in. I'll be into DSMs for a while that's for sure. 9 years down, many more to go. For me, a maroon 1gb tsi awd in 1999-2000 shortly after I came to Canada started it. I saw it at this community centre we always went to, it was always parked outside. I always broke my neck staring at it. I knew when I could drive, I wanted that car. The older I got and the more I learned about them, the more I needed one

Our Canadian DSM community is one of the better/best car groups out there for the most part. We may not be the most active but almost everyone is a stand-up character. ^ Defiantly agree with the above, somehow i could not adopt to any other community out there including in Cali. Just a few selective friends here and there using totally different platforms. ...the words "TSI AWD Turbo" written on the side. Yes yes i remember that from my high school. I actually even considered putting that sticker on my 1Gb ESi because everyone asked me I had that model haha i think its the looks of the car that keeps bringing me back to it ^ That and of course the amount of power you can squeeze out of stock engine and stock drive train. As Jeremy G once pointed out, DSMs put power to the ground really well. 30psi on stock 7bolt with AWD is a very special combo that drives my Cali friends crazy with their high dollar semi-exotic cars. Speaking of disease, recently I scored this brand new PS pump which supposedly the last one in US inventory I love chasing rare DSM parts which also adds to my DSM disease. So far i scored the following: - evo 3 5th gear (got stollen ) - evo 3 IM with brackets for ignitor and coil pack - evo 3 valve cover (Mitsubishi + emblem) - 2Ga rear diff LSD with axles (manual) - Gallant front knuckles - APC upper aluminum control arms - 2Gb 1999 white cluster turbo (manual) - 1ga HD gears - black leather interior
