i think me and durwin are the only ones in club dsm canada history to have experienced a transfer case lock up in the middle of the HWY at 100 km/h and live to tell about it.
well it happened a few hrs ago, the car with the jap spec engine (driven by durwin) on 407 ...smooth sailing, no funny noises no vibrations, and suddenly BOOM!!!!! as if we hit a deer (made of metal) thats exactly what it felt like, the car shook violently, felt like all the 4 wheels flew off and the car was sliding on the ground without wheels....cannot emphasize the shaking...it was severe, and durwin managed to cut across 2 lanes and go on the shoulderwhile the car was moving with momentum and the wheels were not turning...
got to the shoulder, i had no idea what it was,... took off the timing belt cover ... it was fine,...started the engine, it started rightaway, 20 HG vac, revved nicely, so it wasnt the engine (*sigh of relief*)
look underneath,...no smokes, just funny smells,... tried putting it in gear, the car jerked but the wheels would not budge. As if you are trying to genly push the gas while firmly pressing the brakes in an automatic car. tried all gear incl. reverse, and no luck
so we called a tow truck, and 1.5 hrs later when it finally arrived, i tried to see if there was any freeplay in the drive shaft...none whatsoever!!!! normally there is a tiny bit of freeplay, but there was none this time!
time to get a new T case from satan! but man, its a NASTY experience,... the wheels just locked!!!! no warning, no noises, no nothin, this sh*t is dangerous,...i mean if there had been a truck behind us or beside us...well... luckily there wasnt.
GET YOUR T CASES CHECKED!!!!!
the funny thinhg is we checked ours less than 60km ago...and i inspected the bolt,...its still there, so its not like it fell off and all the juice went out,... same with the diff bolt and tranny bolt,... all there and all the fluids were topped off / inspected less than 60 km ago!!!!

Can you say lawsuit! Dude if I was you I would be suing Chrysler, but then they would say something about it not being stock.

Glad to hear you're both O.K. !!! And the car, as well (for the most part..) Had the recall been done on this one?? (Doesn't sound like fluid loss was the problem though..) ------------------ 1992 Eagle Talon Tsi FWDSuperiority after 60'.. ICQ # 9622983 www3.sympatico.ca/steve.kinnaird

hi maybe the fluid leaked out of the seals...i mean we changed the X case fluid 60 km before the incident, and when i leaned to look i wanted to make sure the bolt hadnt fallen off. i called chrysler and the dealer, this is what they said: "there is a recall on this car but its for leaks only... since there is no warrany on it, we wont be replacing the X case, we will only be replacing the seals as per recall." <-- this is what chrysler said not the dealers. WTF??? if there hadnt been a defect it would not have leaked right??? and it would not have seized!!!! they are telling me its not covered under warranty- well doh!!! i am not calling for a warranty job, i am calling about a recall!!! It sounds like you'd have had more luck with the dealer if someone had been injured/killed!!! Anyhoooo,,, if the transfer case is a 22 spline model,,90-91... I have one that's just been rebuilt, including the recall seals for sale...

I think that I may have experienced it as well, but we were moving at 190km/h at the time and it felt like it just tore *through* the lockup. Unfortunately, the force required to do that almost tore my tranny and rear diff in half... (:
No damage or anything to the Xfer case. Strange...

I'm glad you and Dur are OK!
Dealer recommendations? Call Parkway Plymouth Chrysler in Mississauga. Our friend/member, John (don't know his last name, sorry) is a mechanic there. Ask for him and I'm sure he'll back you up with his service advisors.
Good luck.

Yeah Scharok, Chrysler HAS to install a new transfer case. It's right in the text of the recall notice. "If the gears in the case have been badly damaged or seized it will be replaced by a new style case." There were literaly hundreds of people in the states getting new transfer cases from their mitsu/chrysler dealer. A couple people wrote back and said they looked under the car a couple days after the new t-case was installed and found it was leaking again. I think the only real solution to the t-case problem is to RTV the yoke. I don't think I've heard of one person doing that and then ever having a leak again. ------------------ Dan Aho 1991 Eagle Talon AWDBoosting on the flatlands

Just noticed one thing you said: "the funny thinhg is we checked ours less than 60km ago...and i inspected the bolt,...its still there, so its not like it fell off and all the juice went out"
The drain/fill bolts are not the problem. It's the yoke in the transfer case. It's inside the silver housing which the drive axle connects to on the transfer case. You'd have to pull the driveshaft to check if the transfer case was leaking...

What's with all these shaft-end problems? First me, now Scharok. Almost the exact same thing, just different places. Who's next in line for drivetrain problems? Could it be that the 90-91 cars are hitting their service limit for drivetrain parts right now? ------------------ Dan Aho 1991 Eagle Talon AWDBoosting on the flatlands

Personally, I think it's just a line from them to cover the fact that the Xfer case locked and sheared off the tip of the rear axle? Right??? Guys?!? (:
(That's what they found with mine as well, only with much more drastic results... I stick with my story, though. Mine happened at cruise as well...)

Scharok, What year is your Talon?? I have a 97. I've had two problems with my transfer case. I go to Eastway Chrysler The first time around, the dealership (Eastway Chrysler) replaced the transfer case bearings. The second time the manager, Maurice, took my Talon away from me and would not allow me to drive it. The transfer case was leaking again. They supplied the rental. Great dealership!! No problems with mods and warranty. Actually they look forward to see the latest "tweaks". Tell them Doug sent ya
