I had my engine just rebuilt 12000kms ago. On sat. while crusing at a good old 80kms on the highway my timing belt decided to play chainsaw an cut through the upper and lower belt cover. I removed the walve cover to find rockers in odd places and pretty much all my valves bent. Hey that fairly normal, but what wasn't was when i went take out all the plugs #3 was hard as ever. It felt like It had been crossthreaded in there, as soon as i got it out i realized the problem. melted to the sparkplug is another spark plugs worth of metal and a bit of ring attached to that.

looking into the cylinder with a light i can see lots and lots of metal fragments. The total damage will be known after the head is removed. tu I love my talon wink

Ouch.

Post some pics for all to see.

When I pulled the engine out of my 1G I saw the same thing, I ended up retrieving half of a valve from the oil pan. eek

How did the belt go through the covers? Did the cams come loose?

It looks as if the belt slowly shifted and then eventually got to the covers and melted through them in 10mins. I had just had the hood open before I left my house and didn't see anything out of the ordanary as of now I belive the tension was off that plus a little oil had spilled over while i was topping it up and made its way over to the belt? Just assumptions cant really tell considering everything under the hood is now covered in oil, (dont know where it came from yet). I should have the head off in a day or two and get a real analysis of the situation.

When I had a mechanic do my tbelt, he didn't tension it properly, and it ended up chewing through the cover. I caught it just before it let go...

The next tbelt job I needed was done with my own hands, and I made sure it was done properly.
