I'll set up the story for you guys... I'm planning on storing my car this winter and just picking up a car for the winter. My Talon is a 97, and I found a 95 that was a decent price that I'm really interested in. Currently, I'm paying $340 a month for insurance on my 97, that includes collision and all that good stuff. I called my insurance company today to ask about a quote on the 95. I figured it would be a few bucks less, being the car is 2 years older. WAS I EVER WRONG! They quoted me $550 a month for the 95. How does that even make sense? The car is exactly the same (body, engine etc) and its two years older, yet the isurance is significantly higher? I think there just pulling numbers out of their asses!

Well well well, I had an 89 colt 1.6 turbo and insurance was at least 140$ more than a talon, becuse the colt was considered a high risk high performance vehicle... mostly because it was called an Eagle Vista GT key word GT. Go fiugre, shop around, my driving record is at least 2 pages long with tickets and such.. I went to another company, paying less then the original company when they didn't know about any tickets. Its really about who you deal with. /drinking tonight apologies in advance

I agree - shop around. While you are doing that, tell them you are trying to decide between a 97 and 95, and you want to know if there is much difference in insurance. It could be that the insurance on a 95 is higher than a 97, because there were a 10 times as many 95's made, and so the number of total claims would be higher. Maybe they take don't into account the ratio of claims to number of cars manufactured. I'm not sure how accurate this is (hey, I got it off the internet, so it has to be the truth, right ) that there were like less than 2,000 97's made, compared with 20,000 95's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Talon#Production_numbers_2 Mike

One more thought Jay. If you do find out that other insurance companies are quoting you a better difference between the 95 and 97, then yours is "pulling numbers out of their a$$es", so go back to see if yours will revisit their 95 numbers. If you show them you've done some homework, then they're less likely to rip you off. Of course, make sure that you aren't already getting a better rate from them on your 97, or it will backfire! Mike

I have almost the same problem. I am storing my talon for the winter and like to drive 1990 Toyota Corolla. They gave me 200 one way and that’s it, while I am paying 152 for my talon and my driving record is clear like water , don't even have a parking ticket. Now it’s mostly like I have to use bus this winter. This is horse sh!t , they just set up a rate and no one can stop them, then they are saying; %70 of the young drivers have no insurance , they never think that they want to have insurance but they can not afford these stupid rates. The stupidest matter is that the price for buying a car is ALOT cheaper than insurance rate.

It's all about numbers. There's so many corrolla's out there making so many claims it raises the rates.

More then numbers... what's more important is where you live, if you use your car for work and duductable.
Someone in a major city or town will often pay a lot more insurance then some one with a rual address. My insurance went up nearly $200 a year just because I move to a larger town closer to a major population. In other cases like my bike insurance I tell them it's for pleasure use only because a bike or car used to drive to work is 2X as much.
The higher your deductable the cheaper the rates. Mine is set at $1000 for my car, at $300 or $500 it goes up a couple hundred a year

Bah.
It's all highly subjective bullsh*t. The insurance industry can snowjob you with all sorts of "reasons" as to why one car costs more than another based on number of claims, or miscellaneous statistical numbers. However it's all there to rationalize their ability to charge you whatever the hell they want.
It's nothing more than game of:
You: "hey how much is this to buy?" Them: "How much you got?"
You can shop around but you have to take their word for it when they give you a price, then suck it up and pay it.
I vehemently despise the insurance industry with every fibre of my being because it's legalized extortion, with absolutely no accountability. Insurance companies are in business to make money for their shareholders, and they don't get rich by writing a lot of cheques. If they can get you for $1, then sure they can get you for $2......and so on.
I also love the concept of deductables:
You pay them thousands of dollars over a period of time to "protect" you, or come to your aid when you need it. Then when and if the time comes for them to make good on what you have paid into, they reluctantly say: "Ummm..........we'll help you, but we ain't paying for all of it you know..." so you have to pay even more out of you own pocket.
Here's a simple question: Does that seem fair to you?
I apologize. There's no useful info in this post in regards to Jay's original inquiry, I just needed to vent my utter disdain for the insurance industry.
One things for sure, Al Capone himself would be proud of this racket.
I want an RS4.

Well, thanks alot guys for all your input. I'm currently shopping around because I dont think its fair that I'm going to be paying hundreds of dollars more to insure a car that is two years older. My driving record is clean *knock on wood* so I dont understand what would make the insurance on an older car more expensive. I understand what everyone is saying about the claims, perhap there are a larger number of claims on the 95 as opposed to the 97, thus raising the rate on a 95. I think its all a joke, I'm shopping around to see what I can find elsewhere, I dont want the insurance company to review my insurance in case they made a mistake or something, but theres no way I'm spending $500+ a month to insure a winter beater.

Of course, Adam meant www.insurancehotline.com . Maybe he's still hammered from the other night I plugged in my info for a 95 and 97, and the 95 was cheaper by more than 10%. Of course, there are a gazillion variables, such as where you live, and what age group you are in. However, this probably doesn't include the "screw you" factor they slap on because they're jealous that you drive a better car than they do And because I got it off the internet, it must be true!
