Anyone in or around Ottawa going? I was thinking about going but I was really wondering if it's worth blowing a $1000 USD to go down there.

Dude, only reason why I ask is because I'm 17 years old, Money is a VERY precious commodity.

BTW, who's buying me the beer?

Stupid 21 year old drinking age. DAMN AMERICANS WHEN WILL THEY LEARN.

I don't think when I was 17 I would venture down if money was a serious issue. Thats my opinion though, it also wont cost you a grand either.
Maybe 3-400 bucks US all included.

Don't be offended if I do not feed you beer while we are in the US of A.

These guys don't fool around and you would probably be getting 25 years in jail for drinking beer (underage). Just imagine how much time I would be sentenced if I would be the individual that feed you the stuff!!! eek

But in montreal they would sell beer to a 9 year old so he would be OK.

Not a bad idea, what do they charge you to camp out there? How are the, if there are any, shower facilities?

If the weather is anything like last year, I don't know if I'd want to be in a tent lol. Friday and Saturday, while we were just leaving Cedar Point, it started to pour, and I mean torrential down pour. It was crazy.

If things work out as I hope, might take the weekend, the Talon, and the GF to head down there. It's a few months away, so I'll have time to get myself out of the "stock" hole and put up a timeslip. Let's get some Ontario plates down there!! (with the Club DSM Canada frames around them of course!!)

Everyone says this year after year but then everyone drops out like flies in May and only a handful end up going.

Is anyone from Ottawa or surrounding area "seriously" thinking of going? I'm considering making the trip this year. Not sure if I'll trailer the car or drive though.
Anyone? Anyone?

Yes they have shower facilities! Camping was like $12 a night. It was fine. Got hot at times but the beer took care of that. Only part thats sucks is that a lady will come around and collect the money at around 8am!

Which kinda sucks when your hung over and still drunk.

Where do you guys cross at, Im thinking Windsor/Detroit.

If you're going then I'm in for sure. I'd be driving my car down.

Perhaps we can meet up with the TO group and convoy down together.

We personally like to cross at the Falls and go that way. It's definately longer but less pot holes. When you're taking a fleet and trailors we find it easier.

A small group of us from Ottawa are making plans to head down as well. We'd like to meet up with some of you guys from the Toronto area and all drive down together. Is the majority driving out Friday morning?

As far as I'm concerned we (Peckerhead, Andy and I) will be leaving Friday AM.

I'd be happy to meet up with some of you for a caravan wink

Hey Mark,

I think it's best to figure out those fine details in early August. Too many people say they will come but we get the same lame excuses every year:

"I can't get time off work"
"I can't afford the <$150CDN trip"
"My g/f and I got in a fight"
"My car blew up" tongue (this one is legit)

I'll meet up with you guys for the drive down if that's ok. Still have to confirm who's going from Ottawa. There's 4 of us thus far.

Tim: thanks for the link! I'll be going to the Shootout event. Is there a caravan going from the GTA? Is there an official videographer for the event.. if so, I'll volunteer for ca.dsm -- I have a professional 3ccd videocam and a full non-linear editing suite. Most of my work are for weddings, but I think I can do a car event! wink

We should get a list of who's going and where they are from and find the appropriate place to meet. Obviously this will happen in the months to come to the event but just an idea.

Matt, we should get together in the upcoming weeks to discuss some of the details. So far it's Ali, Yassar, Ryan Cherry, Matt Tremblay and myself.

Giz, Andrew, and the Ottawa guys.

We could all meet up at the 401 stop between Brigton and Trenton to head down to TO as a group.
If anyone from Kingston area is coming, be a good place to meet up.
Just an idea....

The "old guy" caravan will be leaving Friday. Some of us are from the GTA area.

Now, I'll have all kinds of time to talk about DSMs, because I won't be busy fixing mine!

The meeting places we normally have are:
HWY #10 (Hurontario) and 403 (plaza just north of the 403)

The next stop is at the Tim Horton's/Home Depot at Hwy 20 in Stoney Creek (Just off the QEW)

Then its straight off to NY, where we stop for lunch at the McDonald's/Denny's in N.Y. State.

From there it's non-stop to Ohio, and the Gull/Buschur's place.

Dinner is at Stirk's in Norwalk. Just remember the words "bacon gravy"

smile

Then BEER till the early morning hours!

Screw Stirks man. I'm going to hit up Ryans like 20 of us did last year lol. 8.99 for the buffet, they had everything you could think of, from sea food, to steaks to bbq pork and chicken. You name it. All you can eat!

Oh and don't forget people you WILL NEED a passport to get across the border this time frown so add another 80-90 bucks to your trip budget.

Stirks is part of the history,
DSM.CA has been going there for years, we have gone as far as to get bacon gravy and bring it back for members that have not been able to make the trip that year, (even if they drop the container in thier driveway).
Went through Detroit the first year (didn't caravan down) and man never again, crappy roads and driving through blocks of ghetto areas wasn't confidence inspiring.
What about the Mexi restraunt though...

Ziggy, what Tim said is true about Detroit. One guy we were with (Dennis) bent 2 rims from the potholes. The slum parts of town were NOT very fun either smile

Tim, I'm for the mexican place again too.

btw did someone say "screw Stirks?" WTF?

HEY! I saved 80% of that bacon gravy I dropped!!

"Screw Stirks"?!?!

Noob.

The mileage difference between Niagara/Detroit really isn't that big. Besides, living where I do makes me REALLY biased towards crossing at Niagara.

Where did you get that from??

"Do I need a passport to travel to the United States?
Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian citizens do not currently require a passport to travel to the United States. However, Canadians who are travelling outside Canada are encouraged to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.

In April 2005, the United States Government announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all visitors to and from the Americas, including Canadian citizens, to present a passport to enter or re-enter the United States by December 31, 2007.

The WHTI will be implemented in three phases, as follows:

December 31, 2006 - A passport will be required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - The passport requirement will be extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel."

it was June 2006 last year when i crossed and was reading up about it. Guess they extended it. Good, don't have to drop 80 bucks on a passport!

Well, there's talk of Ian and Brian staying in the room next door, so maybe you can pull senoirity on Brian, and put him in the cot. wink

I'm getting a lot of emails this year, kind of unusual for so early. Is it going to be a big year?

Ziggy - re route, yes it's almost the exact same distance, down to the last km... but, in addition to detroit, somehow the NY state thruway just seems to run quicker.
No idea why.

Streets & Trips, sort of backs that up. The detroit route is 10km shorter, but the NY/Ohio route, is 20 mins faster. smile

Now, what USED to be real fun, was the ferry ride from Leamington to Sandusky, via Pelee Island. That was fun... bit of a hassle, but fun. smile

Was thinking about taking the ferry lsat year, was going to cost way too much so we drove.

Just checked the distances from London, it's about 150 miles further for us to go through Fort Erie/NY and around.
Looks like Detroit again it is.

Hi folks,

A few weeks ago, I made an offer to Andrew Bienhaus to be the official Club DSM Canada videographer for the Shootout 2006 event. The plan is to shoot footage of the entire event, including the caravan from the GTA to Ohio, edit and render DVD's for resale to club members with all proceeds from the DVD's to be donated back to the club in order help with all of the admin costs associated with this website & UBB.

About the DVD:
It will be professional grade, captured with dual Sony 3CCD videocams and rendered with a non-linear digital suite.

I would like to start by gauging the interest level of such a DVD. I'm also open to hearing any suggestions or recommendations on what you would like to see. This is your event, your video. Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't care at all about the proceeds angle, but it's always fun to go back and look at bits of the event, months later... particularly when something cool happens.

Jason: make sure you don't lose too much time on it though, I mean, make sure you still have fun. smile

Ziggy: Good question.. I think $15-$20 max would be fair for a DVD video of an entire weekend. Let me know what you guys & gals think. It will probably be approx 60 minutes long + a video montage of the entire event.

Andrew: Thanks! wink I'm really looking forward to the event and I'm sure it'll be great times! I'm also confident that we'll manage to get some cool stuff on video.. and some funny moments as well! smile

At $15 - $20. for even 30 minutes of good footage, I am in for one copy smile

Another thought, Jason..perhaps you could supplement your income by videoing some of the actual runs for individuals....

Ziggy: Well I figure each DVD will cost me maybe ~ $3 to produce, the remainder of the proceeds will be donated to Andrew to help with the maintenance of the Club DSM Canada UUB.

With regards to video'ing some of the actual runs for individuals, I don't have any problems doing that if there's any interest.. I would be more than happy to accomodate as best as I can. A few years ago, I used to be one of the videographers for SCCA events at NHIS (New Hamphire International Speedway). Those were good times. smile

Sign me up for one.

I recall there being videos made of some previous shootouts. I never bought a copy, and regretted it. Especially when we were watching the old ones a couple years ago.

It's almost like looking back through my H.S. yearbooks. wink

I'll see if I can find someone to capture the blitz from Ottawa down the 401 to meet up with the GTA guys. I think I know of 2 guys that will be running after each other full out for like 2 hours. I'll try to keep up to them.

Im down for a DVD.

Yeah ditto.
And not to steal any money from Andy, but I think you need to pay yourself a bit for your time and energy (IMHO)

But I'd take a copy for sure smile

Vid could be fun.

Now that would be nice if we could get similar t-shirts as the one made by Craig Watson a few years back.

They were an excelent quality and the design was pretty good.

Yeah, it's been a few years since we've had any official shirts.
I have one here, that had to b retired as a garage rag, but only for the DSM. wink (too many holes, the wife insisted)

We've done a few "special" custom ones, but yes, perhaps we should try again?

Who was the fellow that did them from the ottawa region? Is he still around? He and his son used to come...? (memory failing, forgive me, too much cooking with aluminum pots, or grinding aluminum heads, or something)

Joe Brown??

I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that's his name.

Ugh, unfortunately, his claim to fame in my mind was when he crashed his Talon coming back from the go-carts that shootout. frown

I can also design some T-Shirts and get 'em printed if you guys are interested. We could have a Talon w/ a dyno sheet in the background with the header reading: "Come play with Power" wink

Meh, that might be alright for an every day shirt. But since they're more or less going to be for shootout, I'm pretty sure people are going to know what to expect from dsm's.
Something simple, with the club dsm canada name/logo maybe url on it, shootout 2006 on there possibly.
I don't know.

Yeah, in the past we toyed with creative ideas... some worked. smile

"My alternator is bigger than yours."

Ones we didn't use...

"What's your 402 meter time?"
...and a few other creative distinctly canadian expressions.

But, if anyone has a good one, slogans are always good.

Standard would be small logo over left chest, big something on the back.

And yes, Steve, Joe Brown... but I thought we've seen him since then... I really liked his HUGE logo on the back.
And no, not just because he used my car's image, but the huge red maple leaf he pasted it over, really made it stand out.

I wish it wasn't so worn out, and full of holes. frown

Would pics help?

I'd buy a shirt smile

It's gotta be Canadian, and funny, and reference the internet in some form (cause that's what brought us all together).

I was wondering how much it costs to go for the shootout?
Approximate figure including gas and everything. I know I
will not be able to make it this year but I was thinking about next year.

Thanks

That depends on how far you have to drive, where/how long you stay, how much food you eat, if you go to Cedar Point as well, how much beer you drink......

True that! laugh But we are geeks who go fast... and look sexy (most of us laugh )

We could do a thing on the back of the T-shirt with "You know you own a DSM when..." Take some of the quotes from that post a while back. Possibly including this little one I thought of today:

You know you own a DSM when you're wife/girlfriend REFUSES to have a joint bank account with you. laugh

Get a cool shirt goin and I'll buy a few. Just make sure it's cool and hip so it fits well with yours truly.
