I have my car with SATAN right now he tells me its the fuel pump, even though I have changed the fuel pump three times in 3 weeks! This is what is happening. I am having a lot of trouble starting my car, before it starts I get a lot of fuel coming out by the turbo/exhaust, once it finally starts (after about 1-2 minutes of turning over) it runs very very rough and if I dont give it gas it stalls. The fuel pump in it right now is brand new and delivering pressure, however I still have the problem- what could be causing me to burn out the fuel pump, and what is causing the tough start and idle. My mileage is literally cut in half, I have a new fuel filter, new plugs (.032 gap) new wires, and currently a new fuel pump! This is all for my poor 92' AWD laser. Any suggestions as to what is baking my fuel pumps would be greatly appreciated!!

Yeah I am running to rich. I was having trouble starting because I was literally flooding the engine. My VSV was not switching on and hoding vacuum during cold starting, not sure if it was a problem with the unit ar a connector to my ECM or connector from intake temp sensor. It seems to have been a loose connection, cause it seems to be working now that I disconnected and recconected the ECM. But once it does run it idles at about 1500 rpm and it idles sporadically at that! It also runs really rough. New plugs and wires, so I am wondering if it might be an injector or my ignition coil pack. Also I am thinking it may be the O2 sensor because it has that rough sporadic idle when the engine is warmed up, and not really before- so since the O2 sensor doesnt give feedback until it is warmed up I am wondering if that is what it is. Any suggestions?

If you ask me it sounds like its the MAS air sensor. But you never made mention of any DTC's and normally when the MAS sensor goes your service light goes off. Has it done this? If it really is your feul pump that keeps burning out which is somethin I never heard of and doubt cause you said you were running way to rich and if the pump aint supplyin feul then it cant be that at all.

Things I would do first is:

1) Do a tune up if necessary including your feul filter!!

2) Check for Vacum leaks

3) Do a check on your MAS sensor and connection harness. (You can look up how to do this using a voltmeter and its all in the Haynes manual)

After that if nothin comes up then I'm clueless but hope it helps.

Well, so far I have found one problem, and I thought that was it. The purge solenoid was not holding vacuum at all, which could explain why I was getting too much fuel on start up. Well I thought I had it licked cause after I plugged those two hoses she started up fine as well as the next few times I started her, but then it did the same thing (flooded my engine on start up) with the plugs in place so it wasn't getting any fuel from the purge line. So where am I getting all this damn fuel on start up that is flooding my engine? I do need a new purge solenoid, from dealer $160!! Does anybody know if the purge solenoid is a straight off and on kind of thing or is it voltage sensitive?

Next things I am going to try to check will be the fuel injection control relay and hopefully the injectors and also the MAS sensor.

Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Oh yeah, sorry just to let you know I have new plugs (bosch platinums at .032), wires and fuel filter.

this was on the digest about a guy and his blown fuel pump:

Subject: 1G AWD Fuel pump
Message-ID: <#27>

I did a bonehead move that could have started a fire, or worse, when I did my
190 lph fuel pump swap. The 12v power wire got caught under the top plate when
re-installing the pump assembly and shorted to the tank! It ran fine for almost
four months then the pump went dead.

Needless to say I was grateful that it only needed a tow when it shorted but
I cannot get it working again. The pump works fine out of the car and it
didn't blow any fuses. Is there such a thing as a fuel pump fuse? I couldn't
find one and the DSM wiring diagram doesn't show one. I'm running the stock
wiring (no pump relay mod) and I've checked the MPI fuse and Control Relay
according to the manual and even though I have continuity I have no voltage
to the pump. Is there any way I blew something in the ECU? I would think it
would be fuse protected but I can't find one.

In a poorly drawn diagram both the DSM and Haynes manuals show a fuel pump
check terminal on the firewall but my '91 GSX doesn't have one! I removed the
battery and searched up and down the harness near the timing connector and
came up empty.

Can anyone suggest a solution? I'm stumped and I have to drive my beater '71
Chevy pickup in the meantime. Can you say "Jed Clampett"?

Rick

[I don't think it is possible to blow the fuel pump output of the ECU in
the manner you described because it drives a relay, not the pump directly.
Sounds to me like your fuel pump relay probably got a bit toasty and is
now not working. Have you tried replacing that? -talon mgr]
